{"id":799501,"date":"2026-05-16T01:46:16","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T01:46:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/799501\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T01:46:16","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T01:46:16","slug":"former-action-news-jax-anchor-shares-warning-after-surviving-dangerous-vibrio-bacteria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/799501\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Action News Jax anchor shares warning after surviving dangerous Vibrio bacteria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 Action News Jax has learned officials in St. Johns County are investigating a case of Vibrio vulnificus, a dangerous and even potentially life-threatening bacteria. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">This comes as a local woman and former Action News Jax anchor shares her recent battle with Vibrio that turned a family getaway into a fight for her life.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>&gt;&gt;&gt; STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE &lt;&lt;&lt;<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Tera Lageman\u2019s family had a great time during a weekend trip to Charleston, South Carolina this past Valentine\u2019s Day weekend. Dining out was a part of their agenda and included a longtime family favorite, raw oysters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cThat is a family tradition. My dad and I especially, are just oyster connoisseurs.\u201d Lageman said, \u201cThat weekend, we ate oysters Friday night, Saturday night, at brunch on Sunday, we ate a lot of oysters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">By Sunday, Lageman started feeling off and chalked it up to food poisoning. But in the wee hours of Monday morning, her condition deteriorated. She said her husband Jeff, a former Jacksonville Jaguars player, woke her up and knew something was seriously wrong. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cHe had to wake me up because he said i was almost delirious and just would not stop moaning in pain,\u201d Lageman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Lageman ended up at the Mayo Clinic Emergency Room where doctors ran tests and determined the culprit was Vibrio. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Tera Lageman's test results showing a positive Vibrio diagnosis\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/https:\/\/cloudfront-us-east-1.images.arcpublishing.com\/cmg\/ZZFNPCYT3JGZRL7YN3J6ICGUZU.jpg\" width=\"1440\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"ImageMetadata__MetadataParagraph-sc-1htor29-0 jibCgM image-metadata\">Tera Lageman&#8217;s test results showing a positive Vibrio diagnosis Tera Lageman&#8217;s test results showing a positive Vibrio diagnosis <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cI had never heard of that, had no idea what it was. They explained it to me and I was shocked,\u201d Lageman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">The<b> <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vibrio\/about\/index.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vibrio\/about\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><b>CDC says vibrio<\/b><\/a> are bacteria that naturally live in certain coastal waters and can enter the body if you eat raw or undercooked shellfish or have open wounds that are exposed to floodwaters, seawater, or brackish water. The CDC said Vibrio bacteria typically grows faster from May to October when the water temperatures are warmer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Lageman said she was immediately isolated from other patients and given a strict course of antibiotics and fluids. Her blood was also constantly tested to make sure the bacteria hadn\u2019t spread into her bloodstream. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">After three days in the hospital, she was cleared to go home, but a couple of days later, the pain returned with a vengeance and sent her back to the emergency room. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cThe worst pain I\u2019ve ever felt was when I had my daughter. This was 10 times worse than labor pains,\u201d Lageman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Lageman learned the bacteria had inflamed her body. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cThe CT scan showed that my diverticulitis was worse, and then my appendix was about to rupture. So, they had to take me into emergency surgery to get an appendectomy,\u201d Lageman said.<\/p>\n<p><b>St. Johns County investigating case of Vibrio vulnificus<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Lageman is sharing her story, as Action News Jax has learned five cases of Vibrio vulnificus, one of the most dangerous species of vibrio, have been confirmed in Florida so far this year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">That includes a case reported in April in St. Johns County. Action News Jax asked the St. Johns County health department how the case was contracted. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\"><b>[DOWNLOAD: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/mobile-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><b>Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks<\/b><\/a><b>]<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">A spokesperson said in part, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/stjohns.floridahealth.gov\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/stjohns.floridahealth.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>DOH-St. Johns<\/b><\/a><b> <\/b>cannot comment on an ongoing epidemiological investigation. Details about specific cases and individuals is confidential.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">But checking state health data, Action News Jax learned the person is between 75 and 79 years old and the infection was acquired in Florida.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Lageman said the life-changing ordeal has made her more vigilant and she wants others to be careful too. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\"><b>[SIGN UP: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/membercenter.actionnewsjax.com\/newsletters\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><b>Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter<\/b><\/a><b>] <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cI guess i would just warn people just to do your research,\u201d Lageman said. \u201cIt\u2019s changed my whole family. I don\u2019t think any of us will ever eat raw oysters ever again.
