Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and City Councilman Adrin Nazarian Friday celebrated the installation of new solar streets lights in North Hollywood, which are part of an initiative to repair and replace up to 60,000 electric-powered lights over the next two years.<\/p>\n
City workers installed 11 solar lights south of Valley Plaza Park in a nearby neighborhood. The program to install new solar street lights aims to bolster public safety, address a backlog of street light repairs and reduce copper wire theft.<\/p>\n
In the last few years, the city has been plagued with copper wire theft, and has been unable to keep up with restoring broken street lights unrelated to crimes. Bass launched the initiative to replace up to 60,000 street lights with solar lights in March, which is being done in coordination with the Department of Water and Power.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese are the basics that shape how we feel about our city, and whether our city is safe,\u201d Bass said in a statement. \u201cThe street light backlog that piled up before I took office is unacceptable \u2014 we\u2019re addressing it and making it safer for people to walk their dogs, come home from work and park their cars at night. Instead of continuing to patch together antiquated street light technology, we\u2019re using solar to make our lights more reliable, resistant to theft and cleaner to operate.\u201d<\/p>\n
City officials such as Bass and City Council members hope that solar-powered will be less susceptible to theft because they don\u2019t use copper wire, and will be more cost-effective over time.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you want to create spaces that people can utilize, you need to make sure that they feel safe, and that takes secure reliable lighting. This is now a place where young families can walk with their kids and our seniors can go out in the evening and feel comfortable, because these lights won\u2019t be ripped off and they won\u2019t lose power during a blackout or a windstorm,\u201d Councilman Nazarian said in a statement.<\/p>\n
