{"id":799633,"date":"2026-05-16T03:06:18","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T03:06:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/799633\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T03:06:18","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T03:06:18","slug":"video-exploring-juanita-crafts-legacy-through-a-community-walking-tour-dallas-free-press","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/799633\/","title":{"rendered":"Video: Exploring Juanita Craft\u2019s legacy through a community walking tour \u2013 Dallas Free Press"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While exploring the <a href=\"https:\/\/friendsofjuanitacraft.org\/house\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Juanita Craft Civil Rights House and Museum<\/a>, Lauren Williams felt enlightened to learn about the South Dallas civil rights leader.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt sheds a light on almost all of the different phases that have happened through Black history \u2014 just in one person,\u201d Williams says.<\/p>\n<p>Williams was one of dozens of residents who participated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/dallasfreepress.com\/south-dallas-events-2\/#!\/details\/walk-with-juanita-and-jane\/18620858\/2026-05-09T10\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Walk with Juanita and Jane<\/a>, a mile-long tour hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallaslibrary.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dallas Public Library <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/friendsofjuanitacraft.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Friends of Juanita Craft Civil Rights House and Museum<\/a> on Saturday, May 9.<\/p>\n<p>The tour was inspired by a movement called <a href=\"https:\/\/janeswalk.org\/about-us\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jane\u2019s Walk<\/a>, honoring activist <a href=\"https:\/\/janeswalk.org\/about-us\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jane Jacobs<\/a> by bringing individuals together to walk and uncover stories that shape a neighborhood. Jacobs was a Canadian-American author and activist who advocated for community-centered urban planning.<\/p>\n<p>Juanita Craft was a prominent civil rights leader who lived in South Dallas. Craft fought for desegregation, racial injustice, voting rights and more.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The walking tour started at the Martin Luther King Jr. Branch Library on the same-named boulevard, and ended at the Juanita Craft Civil Rights House and Museum in Queen City, where the civil rights activist lived. The tour made various stops along the way \u2014 at the intersection of\u00a0 Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X boulevards and the <a href=\"https:\/\/dallasfreepress.com\/south-dallas\/a-south-dallas-renaissance-juanita-craft-legacy-mural-unveiled\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mural of Juanita Craft<\/a> by artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakeemwilson.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lakeem Wilson<\/a> commissioned by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewallsproject.org\/dallas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Walls Project<\/a>, and on Pennsylvania Avenue to view new housing development in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>At the final stop, Patricia Perez greeted the tour group at the front steps of Juanita Craft\u2019s home. Perez is a founding member of the Friends of Juanita Craft Civil Rights House and Museum Board of Directors, and personally knew Craft from a young age.
