The inquest into how another major unravelled so quickly has already begun, but nobody can accuse DeChambeau of throwing in the towel. Finishing with three birdies was testament to his powers of resilience, which were put to an excruciating test during another bewildering week.

It’s unusual for players to start with autographs before signing their card – yet DeChambeau scribbled on everything from gloves to headcovers for nearly every one of his young fans who had waited all day to interact with him before disappearing into the scorer’s hut. It was commendable stuff.

When he soon emerged with his playing partners Rickie Fowler and Ludvig Aberg, TG asked DeChambeau if he had a minute for his thoughts. “I don’t,” he smiled. “I really appreciate it though. Thank you so very much.” He sounded sincere, repeated the same apology to a handful of other waiting reporters by the clubhouse and jumped into his Bentley, driving off into the Philly evening.

It’s intriguing for a player so used to controlling his own narrative to leave another disastrous week in a major open to the interpretation of others.

DeChambeau had finished inside the top-five in the past three PGA Championships but was conspicuously not one of the plethora of names up for a pre-tournament press conference. In fairness, the burly Californian did a lot of his talking last week at LIV Golf Virginia, addressing everything from going solo as a YouTube star to the uncertainty of the breakaway league and possible routes back to the PGA Tour. Perhaps radio silence on this occasion was wise. But the questions will soon keep on coming.

DeChambeau is a golfer obsessed with his own stats – be it his launch angle or his YouTube engagement, he always has been. But the ones that matter in this sport’s most meaningful environments have made for grisly reading for a while now. Despite that late flurry, DeChambeau finished 7-over-par, well outside the top 100 in a field of 156, 20 of whom are, of course, PGA club pros.

This is the first time since the summer of 2017 that DeChambeau has missed two major cuts in a row. In those days, he was the slender-framed, breakthrough winner on the PGA Tour who we were calling the Mad Scientist. He is a combined 20-over-par for his last four opening rounds at majors. Since his 2024 US Open win at Pinehurst, he has missed four cuts in these defining tournaments.

So what’s gone wrong?

According to stats guru Justin Ray, DeChambeau has lost more than 10 strokes on the field around the greens in his last four opening major rounds. These sloping, almost cruel putting surfaces here at Aronimink, combined with some of the most egregious pin positions we have seen, left DeChambeau’s head in a blender.

Back on Thursday afternoon, an irritated DeChambeau avoided media and made a beeline for the range after his 76, wailing away balls for 90 minutes with his self-made 3D-printed irons which he’s now convincing himself are the answer. Precision has never been DeChambeau’s game but his distance control with his irons has been a glaring problem in the majors since last year’s Masters, when his heavyweight Sunday showdown with Rory McIlroy turned into a pillow fight.

Debate will rage on as to whether the courses on which DeChambeau tends to obliterare on LIV are providing adequate preparation for these grueling weeks. As will his future on the league, as he continues to flirt with being just about anywhere else.

But how does DeChambeau solve this bizarre major malaise?

Even after his admirable but futile late burst on Friday night, his guess might be as good as ours.

His desperate week was already over, the wheels had come off long ago, but DeChambeau studied his birdie…

[47
1430,62,67,132,68
0":"post-800066","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-golf","8":"tag-golf","9":"tag-sports","10":"tag-united-states","11":"tag-unitedstates","12":"tag-us
["GET
