In harsh parenting environments, this pattern reverses, leaving the child more dependent on external biological regulation over time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Predictive Biological Syncing<\/strong>: By measuring Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia (RSA) in 30-second intervals during a challenging puzzle task, researchers proved that a mother\u2019s nervous system state in one interval directly predicts her child\u2019s physiological stress state in the next.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Physiological Inertia<\/strong>: Children exposed to harsh parenting showed higher \u201cRSA inertia,\u201d meaning that once their fight-or-flight response was triggered by a challenge, their elevated stress levels took significantly longer to return to baseline.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Intergenerational Vulnerability<\/strong>: The study highlights that mothers are at a higher risk of deploying harsh parenting if they experienced maltreatment in their own childhood, a risk that escalates when layered with current mental health symptoms, financial difficulties, or family conflict.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong>Penn State<\/p>\n<p><strong>As\u00a0toddlers\u00a0age\u00a0into\u00a0the preschool years,\u00a0their\u00a0dependency\u00a0on their parents\u00a0usually\u00a0begins to\u00a0ebb.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, a\u00a0new study led by Penn State researchers\u00a0has revealed that\u00a0physically or psychologically\u00a0aggressive\u00a0parenting, such as\u00a0spanking or\u00a0shouting,\u00a0can\u00a0disrupt this\u00a0pattern to the detriment of both child and mother,\u00a0with the child requiring more\u00a0external regulation, rather than less,\u00a0as they age.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The research,\u00a0led by doctoral student\u00a0Jianing\u00a0Sun and\u00a0Professor of Psychology Erika Lunkenheimer\u00a0and\u00a0published in\u00a0Child Development,\u00a0validates\u00a0part of\u00a0a long-standing theory that\u00a0parents act as the primary physiological regulators for their young children,\u00a0according to\u00a0Lunkenheimer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The theory suggests\u00a0that\u00a0a parent\u2019s\u00a0calmer and more regulated state\u00a0allows\u00a0the child to\u00a0better regulate their\u00a0body\u2019s\u00a0response\u00a0in moments of\u00a0stress\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and that\u00a0this\u00a0\u201cco-regulation\u201d\u00a0process\u00a0becomes more balanced\u00a0as\u00a0children\u00a0age.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is\u00a0thought\u00a0that\u00a0physiological regulation is a two-way street, with parents and children\u00a0influencing one another\u2019s\u00a0nervous systems,\u00a0but\u00a0the researchers\u00a0hypothesized and\u00a0found that\u00a0the impact\u00a0from parents to children\u00a0is\u00a0more\u00a0predominant\u00a0in the preschool years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYoung children are\u00a0dependent on their parents\u2019 responses\u00a0not just to get their needs met, but also to learn appropriate rhythms for\u00a0regulating their physical and emotional states,\u201d\u00a0said Lunkenheimer, who is also a co-funded faculty member\u00a0of the\u00a0Social Science Research Institute\u00a0and associate director of the\u00a0Child Maltreatment Solutions Network.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to theory,\u00a0parents\u2019\u00a0sensitive and consistent responses\u00a0foster safety and security,\u00a0so\u00a0the\u00a0child\u2019s\u00a0nervous system\u00a0can\u00a0settle.\u00a0Beyond parenting behavior, our work\u00a0suggests\u00a0that\u00a0a\u00a0parent\u2019s\u00a0calmer, better-regulated physical state\u00a0while parenting also plays a key role, laying\u00a0the foundation for how children\u00a0regulate\u00a0stress\u00a0in their body\u00a0over time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lunkenheimer\u00a0explained\u00a0that\u00a0as\u00a0preschoolers\u00a0age, they\u00a0begin\u00a0to self-regulate with less dependency on their parents\u2019\u00a0input, but there has been\u00a0very little\u00a0if any testing of this theory\u00a0on the biological level. And\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0been even less\u00a0focus in the field on measuring what happens if\u00a0the parent\u2019s and\u00a0child\u2019s\u00a0co-regulation\u00a0of stress\u00a0is disrupted by harsh parenting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0Lunkenheimer, mothers are at risk of parenting\u00a0more\u00a0harshly if they themselves were harshly parented or maltreated as children, and that risk increases\u00a0when they\u00a0feel overwhelmed and\u00a0have more stressors, such as\u00a0parenting challenges, family conflict, financial\u00a0or employment difficulties,\u00a0or greater mental health symptoms.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found that lower-risk, less harsh mothers regulated their young children\u2019s physiology\u00a0during\u00a0challenging interactions\u00a0and that maternal influence weakened as the child developed with age,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0first author Sun, a doctoral student in developmental psychology at Penn State.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, opposite patterns were found for harsher mothers,\u00a0who showed increasing\u00a0external\u00a0regulation of children\u2019s\u00a0stress\u00a0physiology and whose children showed more physiological regulatory difficulties as they aged, reflecting their greater risk for\u00a0developing\u00a0regulatory problems.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The researchers\u00a0observed\u00a0129\u00a0at-risk\u00a0mother-child pairs\u00a0twice,\u00a0once\u00a0when the child was three years old and again one year later.\u00a0Prior to the\u00a0observations, mothers\u00a0answered\u00a0questionnaires about their parenting style,\u00a0reporting on\u00a0harsh\u00a0parenting behaviors, such as if and how often they yell or resort to physical discipline.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During the observations, children were\u00a0given\u00a0a\u00a0challenging puzzle task,\u00a0and\u00a0mothers were told they could offer verbal guidance but should\u00a0not complete the puzzle for them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The pairs were\u00a0also\u00a0outfitted with\u00a0heart\u00a0and breathing\u00a0monitors to track their respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), a physiological measurement of how the heartbeat\u00a0varies\u00a0with breathing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Changes to RSA over\u00a0time can act as a measurement of regulation \u2014\u00a0for example,\u00a0a\u00a0person may regulate their system by taking deeper breaths or pausing to calm a rapid heartbeat.\u00a0RSA\u00a0dysregulation can continue, however, if a person\u00a0remains\u00a0or becomes more stressed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we\u2019re in a challenging situation, the parasympathetic\u00a0branch of the autonomic nervous system\u00a0\u2014 which\u00a0controls heart rate and breathing \u2014\u00a0shifts\u00a0as\u00a0our\u00a0fight or flight response increases to meet that challenge,\u201d Lunkenheimer said,\u00a0explaining that\u00a0RSA is an\u00a0indicator of that change.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cRSA\u202fhas\u202femerged\u202fas\u202fa sensitive, cost-effective, non-intrusive biological measure.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0relatively\u00a0easy\u00a0to capture in\u00a0the\u00a0lab\u00a0while\u00a0parents and children are interacting\u00a0during shared tasks, and it responds\u202fquickly.\u00a0We can see RSA changes based on how mothers and their children interact within five to\u00a030\u00a0seconds.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For this study, the researchers\u00a0measured\u00a0RSA in 30-second intervals\u00a0and found that the mother\u2019s RSA in one interval could predict the\u00a0child\u2019s\u00a0in the next, offering evidence that mothers this influence lessened\u00a0as the child aged from three to four,\u00a0indicating\u00a0the child depended less on their mother for this biological regulation,\u201d Sun said.\u00a0\u201cHowever, the influence increased in harsher\u00a0mothers\u00a0and their children.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This increase\u00a0suggests that children who are harshly parented do not\u00a0regulate stress as well\u00a0as their peers, which leads to them needing even more\u00a0external\u00a0regulation\u00a0help\u00a0as they age, Lunkenheimer\u00a0explained.\u00a0She said\u00a0these findings may shed new light on why\u00a0children\u00a0who are harshly parented or maltreated\u00a0show more rigid, less functional stress\u00a0response systems, possibly\u00a0as a\u00a0result of\u00a0a high-stress environment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found harshly parented children also showed greater RSA inertia: Once challenged,\u00a0it took\u00a0longer for their\u00a0elevated\u00a0stress level\u00a0to\u00a0come back down to baseline,\u201d\u00a0Lunkenheimer said.\u00a0\u201cThese children\u00a0may\u00a0not\u00a0be\u00a0receiving the inputs needed to develop their regulatory systems properly \u2014\u00a0their\u00a0regulatory\u00a0system\u00a0can\u00a0become\u00a0more rigid or less responsive.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lunkenheimer noted that\u00a0the team learned much from this study, in significant part due to Sun\u2019s sophisticated statistical work, and that there are several\u00a0pathways to continue exploring\u00a0the parent-child\u00a0co-regulation\u00a0process, including\u00a0possible targets\u00a0for intervention to help at-risk mothers and children better regulate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis\u00a0study did not assess\u00a0parenting behaviors or\u00a0interventions,\u00a0but\u00a0it provides additional support\u00a0of what\u00a0I have\u00a0found over\u00a0my\u00a0career\u00a0in\u00a0multiple studies: Children have\u00a0the best\u00a0outcomes if\u00a0parents are sensitive\u00a0and attuned to their child while also remaining flexible\u00a0and able to regulate themselves,\u201d Lunkenheimer said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that\u00a0can be\u00a0really hard\u00a0\u2014 you might be attuned to your child, but then\u00a0sometimes\u00a0they throw a\u00a0huge\u00a0tantrum\u00a0when\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0already\u00a0feeling\u00a0overwhelmed.
