The Cowboys are back in town.<\/p>\n
The team arrived in Oxnard, California late Sunday afternoon for training camp.<\/p>\n
It is the 19th time the team has held camp in Oxnard. And as usual, we have some drama on arrival day.<\/p>\n
All-pro edge rusher Micah Parsons was not on the team flight out to Southern California.<\/p>\n
The official report day for training camp is Monday<\/p>\n
And during mandatory minicamp, Parsons told reporters he was planning to show up in Oxnard, even if a new contract extension wasn’t finished.<\/p>\n
Just a few minutes after arriving in Oxnard, and walking off the bus, the bar was set.<\/p>\n
“Super Bowl Champions,” said guard Tyler Smith. “That’s always the expectation.’<\/p>\n
“I go into every season with that belief y’know what I mean,” said defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa.<\/p>\n
Smith and Odighizuwa sent a loud and clear message to their fans and the other 31 teams in the NFL<\/p>\n
“I think it is a realistic goal,” said Smith<\/p>\n
As a franchise, the Cowboys have not reached the NFC Championship game since 1995.<\/p>\n
Coming off a 7-10 finish from a season ago, some fans could say making a Super Bowl run is too lofty of a goal.<\/p>\n
“Last year’s campaign is obviously not at all how we wanted it to go,” said Smith. “A lot of unfortunate things happened. But ultimately this year is a new opportunity. We’re going to attack it the way we need to attack it The goal remains the same.”<\/p>\n
The front office made some moves during the offseason.<\/p>\n
Beyond the starting lineup, critics of the Cowboys say the depth of that talent gets shallow pretty quick.<\/p>\n
“I”m just confident where we are as a team I like the vibe that we have the talent that we have so I’m just excited to see how it comes together,” said Odighizuwa.<\/p>\n
As the team gets ready to open training camp, the Cowboys defense is still waiting for the front office to strike a deal with Parsons on a new contract extension.<\/p>\n
“I talked to him about that,” said Odighizuwa. “Pretty sure he’s going to be here at some point. I know he’s working on getting that deal done. So hope it gets done soon.”<\/p>\n
Smith is also getting ready to start his fourth training camp in Oxnard, and already he’s fielding questions about getting a possible contract extension.<\/p>\n
“I can only control what I can control,” said Smith. “Ultimately I can make every choice every day to be the best I can be on that field. That’ ultimately what I’m going to continue to do.
