\n\tDonald Trump\u2019s defense secretary Pete Hegseth<\/a> was widely mocked<\/a> in April after he read a fake Bible verse from Quentin Tarantino\u2019s 1994 classic \u201cPulp Fiction\u201d during a Pentagon worship service. It turns out Colin Jost<\/a> sort of saw it coming.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring a recent visit to \u201cThe Tonight Show,\u201d Jost revealed that before Hegseth\u2019s viral gaffe he told the \u201cSNL<\/a>\u201d writers room: \u201cWould it be funny if Hegseth just did that Bible verse that they have in \u2018Pulp Fiction\u2019 Remember, from Ezekiel, Samuel L. Jackson?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe writers shot down Jost\u2019s pitch, deeming it \u201ctoo ridiculous\u201d and claiming it \u201cwould take up all this time in the cold open. \u201cAnd then he for real did it, like two weeks later and I was like, \u2018Well, the good news is, I\u2019m being surveilled, so that\u2019s a relief.\u2019\u201d Jost has been playing Hegseth on \u201cSNL\u201d this season to much acclaim from critics and viewers.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe real Hegseth was at a Pentagon prayer service in April when he read the altered version of Ezekiel 25:17 that\u2019s delivered by Samuel L. Jackson\u2019s character in \u201cPulp Fiction\u201d before he shoots a man. Hegseth said the prayer was recited by the \u201cSandy 1\u201d Combat Search and Rescue\u00a0(CSAR) mission in Iran. <\/p>\n

\n\tCalling on everyone to pray with him, Hegseth then read a prayer that was nearly word-for-word the line delivered by Jackson in Tarantino\u2019s film: \u201cThe path of the downed aviator is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who in the name of camaraderie and duty shepherds the lost through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother\u2019s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to capture and destroy my brother, and you will know my call sign is Sandy 1 when I lay my vengeance upon thee. Amen.\u201d<\/p>\n
