Labor is likely to win the Queensland state electorate of Stafford, in Brisbane’s northern suburbs.<\/p>\n

At the end of counting on Saturday night, there has been a 4.1 per cent swing against Labor after preferences, with additional postal votes still to be counted.<\/p>\n

For the LNP to win from here, those postal votes would need to break very strongly in the LNP’s favour, which is very unlikely to happen.<\/p>\n

It means Queensland Labor’s former assistant secretary, Luke Richmond, is on track to enter parliament as the next member for Stafford.<\/p>\n

Speaking earlier tonight, Mr Miles told reporters the swing away from Labor “isn\u2019t a reflection of my leadership”.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When asked whether he believed his party would be better under another leader, Mr Miles said that was a decision for the caucus.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“But I have the support of the caucus right now to be leader, and I’m very proud to be our party’s leader,” he said.<\/p>\n

Former Brisbane city councillor Fiona Hammond contested the seat for a second time for the LNP.<\/p>\n

Addressing supporters alongside Ms Hammond, <\/strong>Premier David Crisafulli celebrated the swing towards the government, while noting he believed they would fall “agonisingly short”.<\/p>\n

“If you had said to me at the start of this that we will be here with a result like this, I think it is probably beyond all of our dreams,” he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Stafford takes in areas north of the Brisbane CBD from Newmarket to Chermside, and since 2001 has been won by Labor at every general election except the 2012 LNP landslide.<\/p>\n

The by-election was held after the death of former MP Jimmy Sullivan, who was found dead in his home in April.<\/p>\n

Mr Sullivan was elected as a Labor member but was expelled from the party in May 2025. He is the son of former Stafford MP Terry Sullivan.<\/p>\n

Miles says a lot ‘stacked against’ Labor<\/p>\n

During his speech at Labor’s election event, Mr Miles called out the decision by the Greens to run an open ticket, as well as the move by One Nation not to field a candidate, as contributors towards the result.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“We have seen a modest primary vote swing towards the LNP. A lot was stacked against us in this campaign,” he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Richmond told his supporters he knew it would be a difficult campaign.<\/p>\n

“I was going up established candidates in an incredibly short time frame,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
