{"id":800923,"date":"2026-05-16T16:18:20","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T16:18:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/800923\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T16:18:20","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T16:18:20","slug":"labors-luke-richmond-on-track-to-win-by-election-in-brisbane-seat-of-stafford","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/800923\/","title":{"rendered":"Labor&#8217;s Luke Richmond on track to win by-election in Brisbane seat of Stafford"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Labor is likely to win the Queensland state electorate of Stafford, in Brisbane&#8217;s northern suburbs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At the end of counting on Saturday night, there has been a 4.1 per cent swing against Labor after preferences, with additional postal votes still to be counted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">For the LNP to win from here, those postal votes would need to break very strongly in the LNP&#8217;s favour, which is very unlikely to happen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It means Queensland Labor&#8217;s former assistant secretary, Luke Richmond, is on track to enter parliament as the next member for Stafford.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Speaking earlier tonight, Mr Miles told reporters the swing away from Labor &#8220;isn\u2019t a reflection of my leadership&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">When asked whether he believed his party would be better under another leader, Mr Miles said that was a decision for the caucus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But I have the support of the caucus right now to be leader, and I&#8217;m very proud to be our party&#8217;s leader,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Steven Miles stands holding a microphone with Luke Richmond on the right. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1778948299_554_9c60c2ee93647574f3a745d4e58de58b.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Steven Miles has addressed Labor supporters alongside Stafford candidate Luke Richmond. (7 News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Stafford takes in areas north of the Brisbane CBD from Newmarket to Chermside, and since 2001 has been won by Labor at every general election except the 2012 LNP landslide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The by-election was held after the death of former MP Jimmy Sullivan, who was found dead in his home in April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Sullivan was elected as a Labor member but was expelled from the party in May 2025. He is the son of former Stafford MP Terry Sullivan.<\/p>\n<p>Miles says a lot &#8216;stacked against&#8217; Labor<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">During his speech at Labor&#8217;s election event, Mr Miles called out the decision by the Greens to run an open ticket, as well as the move by One Nation not to field a candidate, as contributors towards the result.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We have seen a modest primary vote swing towards the LNP. A lot was stacked against us in this campaign,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Richmond told his supporters he knew it would be a difficult campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I was going up established candidates in an incredibly short time frame,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;During this incredibly busy four-week campaign, it has been one of the great joys of my life.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Labor is likely to win the Queensland state electorate of Stafford, in Brisbane&#8217;s northern suburbs.
