CNN<\/a> host Jake Tapper<\/a> said on Friday that it was \u201cderanged\u201d and \u201cdangerous\u201d of President Donald Trump<\/a> to accuse the network and New York Times<\/a> reporter David Sanger of \u201ctreason\u201d over their Iran war<\/a> coverage, which pointed out still-functional facets of Iran\u2019s military.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe New York Times has not reported that the Iranians are \u2018doing well militarily,\u2019 nor has CNN,\u201d said Tapper<\/a>. \u201cThe New York Times and CNN have reported, as is accurate, that despite devastating U.S. and Israeli blows \u2026 the Iranians continue to have some military abilities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump went off on Sanger during a two-minute rant Friday<\/a> aboard Air Force One, calling him a \u201cfake guy\u201d and claiming the U.S. \u201chad a total military victory\u201d in Iran, only for \u201cfake news\u201d outlets like the Times and CNN to \u201cwrite about it incorrectly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI actually think it\u2019s sort of treasonous what you write, but you and The New York Times and CNN, you should be ashamed of this,\u201d Trump told the White House and national security correspondent<\/a>. \u201cI actually think it\u2019s treason when you write like they\u2019re doing well militarily.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tapper noted on \u201cThe Lead<\/a>\u201d that the allegation is \u201call part of a Trump campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n

He explained Friday, \u201cHere\u2019s a Truth Social<\/a> post from earlier this week: \u2019When the Fake News says that the Iranian enemy is doing well, Military, against us, it\u2019s virtual TREASON in that it is such a false, and even preposterous, statement. They are aiding and abetting the enemy!\u201d<\/p>\n

The Times on Tuesday reported<\/a> that U.S. intelligence itself shows Iran still has \u201coperational access to 30 of its 33 missile sites along the Strait of Hormuz,\u201d through which a fifth of the world\u2019s oil passes, contradicting Trump\u2019s claims of complete U.S. dominance over Iran.<\/p>\n

Tapper said CNN similarly cited U.S. intelligence<\/a> in April when reporting, \u201cRoughly half of Iran\u2019s missile launchers are still intact and thousands of one-way attack drones remain in Iran\u2019s arsenal,\u201d and noted Friday, \u201cAll of what the Times and CNN have reported is 100% true.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is what the intelligence run by Trump administration agencies is assessing,\u201d he said. \u201cNow the second point, reporting these facts isn\u2019t treason and it\u2019s deranged for any president to say such a thing \u2014 and potentially dangerous for the reporters he\u2019s accusing of treason.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tapper noted that the Constitution clearly defines treason<\/a> as \u201clevying war\u201d against the U.S. or \u201cadhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.\u201d He said the courts have similarly long defined treason as \u201cconcrete actions with traitorous intent, not reporting facts.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe president\u2019s real issue here is not with us,\u201d Tapper said Friday. \u201cIt is with the facts that we are reporting and with the intelligence reports that contradict his claims. His real issue is the fact that the war isn\u2019t over.\u201d<\/p>\n
