Labor has claimed victory in the by-election for the Queensland state electorate of Stafford, with the LNP conceding it has fallen short of winning the seat in Brisbane’s northern suburbs.<\/p>\n
Luke Richmond, Labor’s former state assistant secretary, is on track to enter parliament as the next member of Stafford, defeating the LNP’s Fiona Hammond.<\/p>\n
Opposition Leader Steven Miles said the “odds were stacked against” Labor in the short campaign, with the LNP candidate having a strong local profile as a former Brisbane city councillor.<\/p>\n
“What we’ve seen in Stafford is the battle lines drawn for the 2028 election.”<\/p>\n

He said the “new member for Stafford” was a community champion who would work hard every day for his electorate.<\/p>\n
The by-election was held after the death of former MP Jimmy Sullivan, who was found dead in his home last month.<\/p>\n
There had been a 4.2 per cent swing against Labor after preferences, as counting continued on Sunday morning.<\/p>\n
Mr Miles claimed the swing was due to One Nation not running in the by-election.<\/p>\n
“We will never know what the result would have been if they had run and not directed their supporters to vote for the LNP,”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
he said.Premier ‘humbled’ by swing toward LNP<\/p>\n
Speaking on Sunday morning, Premier David Crisafulli said he was “humbled by the results” despite the LNP not winning the seat.<\/p>\n
“The votes will continue to be counted, we will fall short, but I’m really proud of the effort,” he said.<\/p>\n
The by-election was held after the death of former MP Jimmy Sullivan, who was found dead in his home last month.<\/p>\n
There had been a 4.1 per cent swing against Labor after preferences, as counting ended on Saturday night.<\/p>\n
“Governments don’t usually get a swing towards them in a by-election, certainly not of this magnitude,” Mr Crisafulli said.<\/p>\n

He thanked “the electors of Stafford for choosing hope over fear” and Ms Hammond for her hard work during the four-week campaign.<\/p>\n
“The results certainly exceeded our expectations,” Mr Crisafulli said.<\/p>\n
It was the second time the former Brisbane city councillor had contested the seat.<\/p>\n
Admitting Ms Hammond “just won’t get there”, Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie said it was still a “disastrous” result for Labor, describing the results as on a “knife-edge”.<\/p>\n
“The results are in last night, and it’s clear that Steven Miles’s leadership is in absolute tatters,” he said on Sunday morning.<\/p>\n
“This was a swing to an incumbent government that we’ve not seen the likes of for 100 years”.<\/p>\n
Mr Bleijie said Mr Miles was trying to “rewrite history” by claiming Labor had received a good result.<\/p>\n
“He didn’t. It was a Labor seat. He tried to make out it was going to be a tough election,” he said.<\/p>\n

Labor has won the seat nine out of 10 times since it was created in 2001.<\/p>\n
Mr Bleijie said the results raised questions over Mr Miles’s leadership of the opposition.<\/p>\n
“Steven Miles is out of depth in leadership, and he just cannot read the room,” he said.<\/p>\n
