PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A 13-year-old boy is recovering at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia after police say he was struck by a vehicle Saturday evening in the city’s Summerdale section.<\/p>\n
Police said the teenager was riding an e-scooter on Oxford Avenue around 5:40 p.m. when he veered through traffic in an attempt to cross the street and was hit by an oncoming black Nissan. Surveillance video captured the crash.<\/p>\n
Neighbors said they were relieved to learn the boy’s condition had improved to stable condition after police initially listed as critical.<\/p>\n
“It was pretty heartbreaking,” one neighbor said. “That makes me feel happy because he had god with him. God stuck by his side.”<\/p>\n
Another video showed the boy riding offscreen before the collision.<\/p>\n
Both the scooter and the car came to a stop near Van Kirk Street, and the Nissan’s windshield was left shattered.<\/p>\n
Residents said the crash underscores safety concerns in the area.<\/p>\n
One neighbor urged riders to “pay attention and stay in the bike lane to stop this from happening.”<\/p>\n
Others called for changes to the intersection.<\/p>\n
“I think we should just put a stop sign right there at that specific area to at least let the people know to be cautious and slow down,” the neighbor said.<\/p>\n
Police said the driver remained at the scene.<\/p>\n
The crash investigation division is handling the case.<\/p>\n
