The course has been open since March, but celebrated the reopening with a shindig on Saturday featuring food trucks and live music.

One of the nation’s oldest mini golf courses, the art deco-inspired course opened in 1929. While the history of Cool Crest’s early years is unclear, Harold Metzger leased the 18-hole course from its original owners in 1937. They owned it until 2010, adding a second course around 1960.

Sleep medicine specialist Dr. James Andry and his brothers purchased the property from the Metzger estate. In 2020, they opened a biergarten on the site named after the Metzgers.

Businessman Bill Lyons and his family are the newest owners. They own Casa Rio on the River Walk and Schilo’s Delicatessen next door. Schilo’s is the oldest operating restaurant in San Antonio, dating to 1917.

They’re bringing Schilo’s in food truck form to the new iteration of the golf course. The menu features tacos and German-inspired items like schnitzel sliders, bratwurst and pretzels. The Metzger Biergarten continues to operate.

A round of golf costs $15 for adults and $12 for children under 12, seniors and members of the military. Children under 3 can go on the course for free. And if people aren’t satisfied with their first round performance, a second round is half off.

The course also offers memberships ranging from three rounds of golf at $25 per month to unlimited golf at $65 month.

A nearly-century-old mini golf course in the Deco District is celebrating its reopening this weekend.
