in the old townhouse, whose traditional storeroom area \u2013 known as a kura \u2013 was turned into a small gallery space.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2018\/03\/21\/issey-miyake-kyoto-shop-naoto-fukasawa-machiya-house\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Find out more about the Issey Miyake store \u203a<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2268798 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/unc-studio-challe-sq-852x852.jpg\" alt=\"Challe by UNC Studio\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Photo courtesy of UNC Studio<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/11\/14\/unc-studios-challe-cafe-kyoto\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Challe cafe by UNC Studio<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the most unusual renovated machiya on this list is Challe cafe, a Japanese-Mexican fusion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/restaurants\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">restaurant<\/a> that has a bold, all-red interior.<\/p>\n<p>The cafe in Kyoto&#8217;s Kamigyo Ward serves speciality <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/coffee\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coffee<\/a>, Japanese tacos and churros.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We imagined a fusion of modern Mexican and Japanese style,&#8221;
