NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — In this episode of “Tiempo,” we’ll talk to a trailblazing Latina and current commissioner of the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services Rossana Rosado.<\/p>\n
Rosado is also the former New York Secretary of State and previously, the first woman editor-in-chief, CEO and publisher of “El Diario,” the country’s largest Spanish-language newspaper.<\/p>\n
Her new memoir, “Bronx Attitude,” retraces her personal and professional journey, from her upbringing in a Puerto Rican family in the Bronx to her high-level career in New York media and public service.<\/p>\n
We will also focus on education and discuss several school mentoring programs in the Uniondale Union Free School District on Long Island.<\/p>\n
The school district has a very large Latino student body. To help Hispanic students there, the district has implemented programs like “Hermanos Unidos” and “The New York State Latina Mentoring Initiative.”<\/p>\n
Their mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships to open doors for youth, foster leadership skills, and prepare students for college.<\/p>\n
Also joining us in this episode is Monique Darrisaw-Akil, the Uniondale Union Free School District Superintendent, Pablo Ocampo, Assistant Principal at Uniondale High School and Estrella Olivares-Orellana, Uniondale School District Director of Multilingual Learners.<\/p>\n
