{"id":803254,"date":"2026-05-17T16:59:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-17T16:59:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/803254\/"},"modified":"2026-05-17T16:59:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-17T16:59:14","slug":"tempe-is-lowering-the-speed-limit-on-these-roads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/803254\/","title":{"rendered":"Tempe is lowering the speed limit on these roads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Tempe City Council recently voted to reduce speed limits along seven busy traffic corridors.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/tempe.hylandcloud.com\/Agendaonline\/Documents\/ViewDocument\/Summary%20Sheet-%205-14-2026%20RCM_ITEM%208C2_RFCA.PDF.pdf?meetingId=1852&amp;documentType=Agenda&amp;itemId=13883&amp;publishId=21512&amp;isSection=false\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ordinance<\/a> lowers the speed limit in all seven corridors by 5 miles per hour. That includes two stretches of Broadway Road, where speed limits will drop from 45 to 40 miles per hour.<\/p>\n<p>Some opposed the reduced limits over concerns with congestion.<\/p>\n<p>But others said the change is needed in high-pedestrian areas, including roads adjacent to parks, canals and Tempe schools \u2014 like a stretch of Guadalupe Road near Marcos de Niza High School.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a great opportunity to bring the posted speed limit more in alignment and support setting speed limits that suit all roadway users,&#8221; said Michelle Beckley, the city\u2019s senior civil engineer.<\/p>\n<p>Based on crash data over a five-year period, the city found that \u201cspeed was a factor in over 20% of all crashes that occurred on the corridors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that the speed of collision has a direct correlation with the severity of the crashes that occur, especially when it comes to non-motorized users, so people walking and biking&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The new speed limits will go into effect in mid-June.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Tempe City Council recently voted to reduce speed limits along seven busy traffic corridors.
