{"id":80327,"date":"2025-07-21T10:05:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-21T10:05:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/80327\/"},"modified":"2025-07-21T10:05:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T10:05:12","slug":"philadelphia-senior-companions-support-aging-residents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/80327\/","title":{"rendered":"Philadelphia senior companions support aging residents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Philly and the Pa. suburbs to South Jersey and Delaware, what would you like WHYY News to cover? <a href=\"#Section1\">Let us know!<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>Every Thursday and Friday morning, Joseph Dennis drives to the Olney neighborhood in North Philadelphia to visit James Henry, who is 61 and has trouble seeing due to a visual impairment.\n<\/p>\n<p>During a recent visit, Dennis sat on the living room couch on the far end closest to Henry, who was set up in his own chair.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust sitting back, just relaxing, just kicking it,\u201d Dennis said with a big smile.\n  <\/p>\n<p>The two men often talk about music, movies and the news.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Henry, he loves to listen to the radio, music. And his favorite music is Gospel music,\u201d Dennis said.\n<\/p>\n<p>Henry also likes to sing.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got something today, you all can hear it,\u201d he said, rolling right into the chorus of one of his favorite Gospel songs, \u201cI Got Love.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got love, love, love, in my heart,\u201d Henry sang as Dennis nodded to the beat. \u201cI got peace, I got joy, I got love, love, love in my heart, in my heart.\u201d<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-708915\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-11-e-lee-james-henry-joseph-dennis-philadelphia-senior-companion-program-harmonica.jpeg\" alt=\"James Henry plays harmonica while sitting next to the Senior Companion Program's Joseph Dennis\" width=\"2100\" height=\"1401\"  \/>James Henry (left) plays the harmonica while Joseph Dennis listens. (Emma Lee\/WHYY)\n<\/p>\n<p>This has been their routine for a couple years now, ever since Dennis, 63, became Henry\u2019s senior companion through a program at the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging that aims to support residents aging at home through friendship and social connection.\n<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcacares.org\/services\/community-connection\/senior-companion-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senior Companion Program<\/a> has become a way to combat loneliness and isolation, which <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2827710?guestAccessKey=6cc10a4c-125a-45c4-aef8-6869c2776dd6&amp;utm_source=For_The_Media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_content=tfl&amp;utm_term=120924\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can be pervasive<\/a>. Research shows it can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/news\/social-isolation-loneliness-older-people-pose-health-risks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contribute to<\/a> cognitive decline, depression and heart disease.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen people get older, if they don\u2019t have a family that really looks after them, they can feel isolated and lonely and everything,\u201d Dennis said. \u201cThis program helps me help people feel as though they still count, they\u2019re still important, they\u2019re still relevant.\u201d<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-708914\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2025-07-11-e-lee-james-henry-joseph-dennis-philadelphia-senior-companion-program-chat.jpeg\" alt=\"The Senior Companion Program's Joseph Dennis sits with James Henry\" width=\"2100\" height=\"1401\"  \/>Joseph Dennis (right), a volunteer with Philadelphia\u2019s Senior Companion Program, chats with James Henry at Henry\u2019s home in North Philadelphia. (Emma Lee\/WHYY)\n<\/p>\n<p>Senior companions must be 55 or older and dedicate at least 20 hours a week to visiting aging residents who are still independent, but may have disabilities or other health conditions.\n<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers go through background checks, special training and get a cash stipend and reimbursements for travel.\n<\/p>\n<p>The program is federally funded through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americorps.gov\/serve\/americorps-seniors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AmeriCorps Seniors<\/a> and served about 63 seniors in fiscal year 2024, program officials said. Currently, there are about 43 active companion volunteers.\n<\/p>\n<p>After retiring in 2016 from his job at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, Dennis said he suddenly had a lot of free time on his hands.
