Applicants should lean into their \u201chuman\u201d skills and tap into their authentic selves to stand out as artificial intelligence shakes up the job market, said North Texas workforce and education leaders at a Wednesday panel.<\/p>\n
The Education Lab<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0the Future of North Texas<\/a>,\u00a0The Dallas Morning News\u2019 community-funded journalism initiatives,\u00a0hosted the\u00a0discussion\u00a0at Shops at\u00a0RedBird.\u00a0Wilborn P. Nobles III<\/a>,\u00a0The News\u2019\u00a0workforce\u00a0readiness and economic mobility reporter,\u00a0moderated the\u00a0event. The panel\u00a0aimed to give residents a place to\u00a0listen,\u00a0learn\u00a0and ask questions\u00a0to\u00a0gain an edge in a\u00a0competitive job market.\u00a0<\/p>\n AI is\u00a0limiting\u00a0opportunities for workers in\u00a0industries most exposed to it,\u00a0a\u00a0Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas report<\/a> found. Since 2022, the year ChatGPT launched,\u00a0overall employment has grown\u00a0in the country. Yet, employment is down roughly 1% across the 10% of sectors most at risk for encroachment by AI.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Those changes\u00a0invoke\u00a0fear and anxiety, the speakers acknowledged,\u00a0but\u00a0AI\u00a0opens\u00a0up\u00a0possibilities.\u00a0They\u00a0drew\u00a0comparisons to\u00a0a time when\u00a0other machines\u00a0such as the typewriter and calculator\u00a0threatened\u00a0to overhaul the status quo.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cThe typewriter took you from writing, but in reality, it didn’t stop you from clearly communicating,\u201d Herndon said.\u00a0<\/p>\n While artificial intelligence is \u2014 as the name implies \u2014 intelligent, it can only go so far, Adams said.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cArtificial intelligence is only as good as\u00a0authentic\u00a0input,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019re going to need somebody to generate these prompts … and that\u2019s where you come in.\u201d<\/p>\n Schools are rushing to equip students in an emerging field. The University of North Texas is launching<\/a>\u00a0an\u00a0undergraduate degree\u00a0in AI, after seeing success in its graduate program. Southern Methodist University is partnering with engineering company AECOM to develop engineers with specializations in AI.\u00a0<\/p>\n Dallas College started embedding Google\u2019s AI certification in technical writing courses, Morris said.\u00a0<\/p>\n While\u00a0\u201cAI fluency\u201d\u00a0is becoming a \u201cnew durable skill,\u201d\u00a0students\u00a0also\u00a0need to\u00a0develop an \u201cethical fluency,\u201d he said.\u00a0Students\u00a0should ask themselves:\u00a0Is this an area where AI should replace a human?\u00a0<\/p>\n Human connection and human relationships still matter in getting a job and succeeding\u00a0on\u00a0the job, they said.<\/p>\n
