{"id":804478,"date":"2026-05-18T06:19:34","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T06:19:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/804478\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T06:19:34","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T06:19:34","slug":"anthony-volpe-nearly-plays-subway-series-hero-with-yankees-future-in-flux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/804478\/","title":{"rendered":"Anthony Volpe nearly plays Subway Series hero with Yankees future in flux"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By the end of Sunday, the Yankees turned a potential feel-good game for Anthony Volpe into a brutal loss.<\/p>\n<p>But they need Volpe\u2019s big day to matter more in the long run than the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/17\/sports\/mets-rally-from-dramatic-win-over-yankees-to-take-subway-series\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">7-6 walk-off loss to the Mets<\/a> at Citi Field.<\/p>\n<p>In his fourth game of the season, after undergoing offseason shoulder surgery and then losing his starting shortstop job to Jos\u00e9 Caballero, Volpe went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, a double and two walks. <\/p>\n<p>It looked like he was going to be the hero after his two-run single in the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie, but the bullpen surrendered leads of 5-1 and 6-3 to overshadow any positives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIncredible: That\u2019s the guy we know,\u201d Aaron Judge said. \u201cThat\u2019s why he\u2019s been our shortstop for the last couple seasons, is when we need him in a big spot, he comes up big for us. Made some good plays, had some big swings for us, took his walks when he needed to in some tough situations. Robert Sabo for the NY Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I was definitely encouraged by what I saw today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Volpe,<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/17\/sports\/yankees-recent-woes-captured-in-one-subway-series-disaster\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> who collided with Max Schuemann<\/a> as both tried to make a play on Carson Benge\u2019s walk-off chopper over the mound in the bottom of the 10th, reached base in nine of his 13 plate appearances in the Subway Series, going 2-for-6 with seven walks \u2014 one of which came with the bases loaded Sunday to drive in another run in the seventh inning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just trying to stay within myself, stay within my approach and put good swings on good pitches,\u201d Volpe said. \u201cObviously, it fluctuates, but I just want to stay locked into that.
