{"id":804606,"date":"2026-05-18T07:44:17","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T07:44:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/804606\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T07:44:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T07:44:17","slug":"terribly-concerning-port-kembla-identified-as-preferred-aukus-base-in-secret-documents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/804606\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Terribly concerning&#8217;: Port Kembla identified as preferred AUKUS base in secret documents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A secret report commissioned by the previous NSW government identified Port Kembla as the ideal location for an east coast nuclear submarine base. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Illawarra port, south of Wollongong, was named in the report as the preferred site for what would eventually become home to an Australian fleet of nuclear-powered submarines under the AUKUS deal\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The documents were tabled in NSW parliament on Friday and warn the base could make the area a &#8220;target for Australian military adversaries&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Port Kembla, Newcastle and Brisbane were shortlisted as possible nuclear base locations in 2022, but both federal and state Labor governments have since said <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-05-03\/nuclear-submarine-base-decision-delayed\/102293870\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/102293870\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a decision on a final location would be made towards the end of the next decade.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In 2023 <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-03-12\/port-kembla-firms-as-site-for-new-submarine-base\/102080154\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/102080154\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the ABC revealed the Illawarra port was Defence&#8217;s preferred location<\/a> for an east coast nuclear submarine base.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Greens MLC Abigail Boyd requested the 217-page bundle under privilege.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In it, the former NSW Liberal government also concluded Port Kembla would be the most cost-effective location to build the base.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The cost analysis compared Port Kembla and Newcastle&#8217;s housing prices, impacts on other industries, and what location was better suited to expand freight capacity.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s terribly concerning that we would be effectively selling off something as useful an asset as Port Kembla to the US,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  Ms Boyd said.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A dark-haired man in a suit speaks to the media while several other men watch on.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/454c0887ee3dc302b53cbca08737e183.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Paul Scully says the ban on secondary dwellings is &#8220;unnecessary&#8221; due to increased knowledge of flight paths and aircraft noise. (ABC Illawarra: Penny Burfitt)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The papers include a reference to a draft cost analysis report dated in September 2023, the first year of the Minns government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But Planning Minister and Wollongong MP Paul Scully repeatedly denied work had been undertaken under the Minns government.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This was all work that was done by the Perrottet government, there is no work that is going on by the current government,&#8221; he told reporters in Port Kembla on Monday.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;That&#8217;s because the federal government has been very very clear that there will be no selection or consideration of an east coast base until at least the next decade.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8216;Nuclear target&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">President of the South Coast Labour Council Arthur Rorris said the report made it clear that residents would not want to live next to a &#8220;nuclear target&#8221; and that people would take it at face value unless the government ruled out the location.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Housing property values will take a hit, your education facilities and schools, your health, your transport, everything will take a hit,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;And for what, the American military machine? I don&#8217;t think this is going to go down very well and I think the federal government know that.
