\u201cReaganomics\u201d is no match for New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.<\/p>\n

During an event to launch the city\u2019s new government-owned grocery stores, Mamdani mocked former President Ronald Reagan and right-wing economics.<\/p>\n

The Mamdani administration plans to open<\/a> five stores as part of his plan to make groceries more affordable, a key issue on which he campaigned last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cI cannot help but think of the words of our 40th President Ronald Reagan. He famously said, \u2018The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: I\u2019m from the government, and I\u2019m here to help,\u2019\u201d Mamdani said.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cIt\u2019s a good quote. But I disagree. I think nine more terrifying words are actually \u2018I worked all day and can\u2019t feed my family.\u2019 We are going to use the power of government to lower prices and make it easier for New Yorkers to put food on the table.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamdani\u2019s statement was a direct rebuke of the right\u2019s consistent attacks on government help that became mainstream orthodoxy following Reagan\u2019s presidency.<\/p>\n

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who represents the section of the Bronx that is home to one of Mamdani\u2019s new stores, praised his administration.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am grateful to Mayor Mamdani and the New York City Economic Development Corporation for their work to open a public grocery store at the Peninsula in Hunts Point and strengthen food access across the South Bronx,\u201d she said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Fox News, which has vehemently opposed Mamdani as a candidate and as mayor, has repeatedly attacked the grocery store idea. In a broadcast last summer, host Sean Hannity said<\/a> it was meant to create \u201csocialism at a level we\u2019ve never seen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Similarly, Charlie Kirk, the conservative podcaster who was killed last year, argued on his show<\/a> last year that the stores were part of a plot to enable the Islamic faith to take over the city, and that \u201cIslam is a means to the end of destruction of the West.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamdani, who officially became mayor on New Year\u2019s Day, has also started<\/a> a free child care program, pushed<\/a> the state government to levy a tax on the ultra-wealthy, and solved<\/a> the city\u2019s budget crisis.<\/p>\n

Fox once lamented<\/a> that his win was the \u201cend of the world,\u201d but so far New Yorkers seem to be doing just fine.<\/p>\n
