{"id":807074,"date":"2026-05-19T08:52:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T08:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/807074\/"},"modified":"2026-05-19T08:52:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T08:52:14","slug":"treasury-retreat-eases-traders-eye-highest-30-year-yield-since-1999","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/807074\/","title":{"rendered":"Treasury retreat eases, traders eye highest 30-year yield since 1999"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yields on U.S. Treasurys were slightly lower early Tuesday,  easing losses in the previous session as traders weigh up central banks&#8217; response to renewed inflation fears. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/US10Y\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">10-year U.S. Treasury<\/a>\u00a0note yield \u2014 the key benchmark for U.S. government borrowing \u2014 was more than 1 basis points lower on Tuesday morning, at 4.6073%. The longer-dated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/US30Y\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">30-year Treasury bond<\/a>\u00a0yield, which is more sensitive to political risks, was last seen holding steady, at 5.1428%.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/US2Y\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2-year Treasury note<\/a>\u00a0yield, which tends to react in line with short-term Federal Reserve interest rate decisions, was also more than 2 basis points lower at 4.0695%. <\/p>\n<p>One basis point is equal to 0.01%, and yields and prices move in opposite directions.<\/p>\n<p>Treasurys were taking a breather after yields soared on Monday, with the U.S. 10-year note yield touching its highest level in 15 months at one point.<\/p>\n<p>It came as a Bank of America survey published on Tuesday revealed 62% of global fund manager respondents expect 30-year Treasury yields to hit 6%, which would mark the highest level since late 1999 and an increase of roughly 86 basis points from the current level. This compares to just 20% of respondents who said they are targeting a 30-year yield of 4%. <\/p>\n<p>Yields on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/DE10Y\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">10-year German bunds<\/a> dropped more than 1 basis point to 3.1471% early on Tuesday. Despite easing, the yield on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/UK10Y\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">10-year U.K. Gilts<\/a> \u2014 the benchmark for Britain&#8217;s government debt \u2014 still remains above 5%, at 5.115%.<\/p>\n<p>Yields on longer-term government debt in the U.K. and Germany also remain elevated. \u00a0The yield on German <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/DE30Y\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">30-year bunds<\/a> stood at 3.6836% on Tuesday, with Britain&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/UK30Y\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">30-year Gilt<\/a> yield rising less than 1 basis point to 5.773%.<\/p>\n<p>Mohit Kumar, chief economist and strategist at Jefferies, said the prevailing sentiment across global bond markets is being driven by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/18\/eu-stagflation-shock-iran-war-oil-prices.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inflationary impact<\/a>, primarily caused by soaring energy costs, as well as deficit concerns, and, in the U.K., country-specific <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/18\/burnham-gilts-inflation-starmer-interest-rates-bonds.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">political turmoil<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even if we get a [Middle East] deal\u2026 oil is not going back to pre-war levels.
