Single-leg heel raises. Foster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a71179402\/signs-of-weak-calves\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a71179402\/signs-of-weak-calves\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"previously\" data-node-id=\"7.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">previously<\/a> told Runner\u2019s World that physical therapists regularly use this move to assess calf strength.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Both Foster and Donovan Stewart, a certified run coach and personal trainer at Life Time in Brooklyn, New York, say you should be able to complete at least 25 to 30 single-leg heel raises with good form.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how to do it:<\/p>\n<ol data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-kw9lqy emevuu60\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:decimal;\" data-node-id=\"10.0\">Stand on flat ground and lift one foot.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:decimal;\" data-node-id=\"10.1\">Press up onto the toes of the grounded foot. If you don\u2019t make it to that rep count, it\u2019s time to start strength training.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Any burning sensations or limited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/health-injuries\/a38542154\/how-to-improve-ankle-mobility\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/health-injuries\/a38542154\/how-to-improve-ankle-mobility\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"range of motion\" data-node-id=\"14.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">range of motion<\/a>\u2014meaning you can\u2019t raise your heel very high off the ground\u2014also signal you should work calf exercises into your routine, Stewart says.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Including this same move as part of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a61560834\/strength-workouts-for-runners\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a61560834\/strength-workouts-for-runners\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"workouts\" data-node-id=\"15.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">workouts<\/a> is actually the best way to improve calf strength, according to Foster. Note how many reps you can complete with solid form to figure out your starting point. For example, if your limit is eight, Stewart recommends you start with two sets of six single-leg heel raises and increase by one or two reps each week.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">As you do the exercise, pay attention to how your ankle is moving to clue you into other weaknesses. If your ankle rolls inward, this likely means the muscles in your foot are weak. It also can indicate hip instability, Stewart says, which you can improve with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a20802578\/glute-strengthening-workout\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a20802578\/glute-strengthening-workout\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"glute exercises\" data-node-id=\"16.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">glute exercises<\/a>. You can benefit from doing calf raises with a yoga block or lacrosse ball in between your ankles.
