{"id":807546,"date":"2026-05-19T13:36:16","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T13:36:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/807546\/"},"modified":"2026-05-19T13:36:16","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T13:36:16","slug":"umpire-leaves-braves-game-after-getting-hit-in-face-with-multiple-foul-balls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/807546\/","title":{"rendered":"Umpire leaves Braves game after getting hit in face with multiple foul balls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">MIAMI (WBTV) &#8211; The home plate umpire who started Monday\u2019s baseball game between the Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins had to exit after he was hit in the face with two foul balls in the same inning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Alfonso Marquez was behind the plate for the May 18 matchup in Miami, when the first foul ball went off the bat of Atlanta\u2019s Austin Riley into Marquez\u2019s facemask.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Marquez took his mask off and walked around for a few seconds before he put his gear back on and resumed the second inning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Seven pitches later, the Braves\u2019 Mauricio Dubon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/video\/plate-umpire-alfonso-marquez-exits-the-game\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/video\/plate-umpire-alfonso-marquez-exits-the-game\"><b>fouled another<\/b><\/a> ball back, again into Marquez\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Following the Dubon foul, Marquez stood still then took off his mask and immediately began holding his face. Medical staff then came out to check on Marquez, and he was eventually removed from the game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/braves-marlins-umpire-injured-marquez-8b0814de39811e6d9beb277800fd20cc\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/braves-marlins-umpire-injured-marquez-8b0814de39811e6d9beb277800fd20cc\"><b>reported<\/b><\/a> the game was delayed for about 16 minutes because of Marquez\u2019s injury. Once play resumed, it did so with a three-man umpiring crew &#8212; one short of the usual four.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Marquez has been a full-time umpire in the major leagues since 2000, according to the AP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The Marlins went on to trounce the Braves, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/game\/_\/gameId\/401815390\/braves-marlins\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/game\/_\/gameId\/401815390\/braves-marlins\"><b>12-0<\/b><\/a>. Miami\u2019s win was highlighted by a grand slam from third baseman Javier Sanoja.
