The Thunder have to do some learning before Game 2 as well"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>OKLAHOMA CITY<\/strong> \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/spurs-victor-wembanyama-ad0e9e2c7202712c15cad52421c15d31\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Victor Wembanyama<\/a> is not going to get any shorter before Game 2 of the Western Conference finals. He&#8217;s not going to get less skilled, and the San Antonio Spurs surely aren&#8217;t going to become less confident, either.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">That means <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/oklahoma-city-thunder\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Oklahoma City Thunder<\/a> have to get a little smarter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">It took historic efforts \u2014 namely <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/spurs-thunder-score-nba-playoffs-1cb14e4088a0ec7bdc3defb93ff79658\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a 41-point, 24-rebound game<\/a> from Wembanyama and a 24-point, seven-steal gem from rookie Dylan Harper \u2014 for the Spurs to grab the double-overtime thriller that was Game 1 on Monday. Game 2 is Wednesday, and it&#8217;s the Thunder who have to answer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cYou&#8217;ve just got to be aggressive, just be smart, I think, more than anything,\u201d Thunder guard and two-time <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nba-mvp-shai-gilgeous-alexander-trophy-silver-4983d8bda6d4c973e07393a22f90b5d6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Most Valuable Player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander<\/a> said of facing the 7-foot-4 Wembanyama. \u201cHe obviously is very big at the rim, but we still found cracks in (the defense) at times. We&#8217;ve just got to be willing to work possessions and make sure we get the best shot each time down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In other words, the Thunder have some learning to do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">And that&#8217;s a bit ironic, because that&#8217;s been the Spurs&#8217; mantra.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/deaaron-fox-spurs-jalen-williams-thunder-6d568f51b9365faea330c7dd85c7ee20\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">San Antonio ruled De&#8217;Aaron Fox<\/a> out an hour or so before Game 1, meaning the Spurs were rolling out the youngest starting five in NBA conference finals history \u2014 a 20-year-old in Harper, a 21-year-old in Stephon Castle, a 22-year-old in Wembanyama, a 24-year-old in Julian Champagnie and a 25-year-old in Devin Vassell. Most of those guys should still be in college, so maybe the various \u201cwe&#8217;re learning\u201d claims that Wembanyama often offers are both accurate and fitting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe want to win everything, and we have the chance to. We have people above us in the organization that know how to do that,\u201d Wembanyama said. \u201cAnd, so far, it looks like they\u2019ve put the right people together to give us a chance \u2014 because right now, we&#8217;ve got a chance. We still got a lot to do, lot to learn, lot of trials to go through that we don\u2019t even know of, but we have a chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Without question, the masterminds of the Spurs \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gregg-popovich-spurs-nba-legacy-1582db5bf3ac4497140403d7d2e779f6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">likes of Gregg Popovich<\/a> and R.C. Buford, the newer wave in general manager Brian Wright and coach Mitch Johnson \u2014 know what they&#8217;re doing. There are banners swaying in San Antonio as proof.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Same goes in Oklahoma City; the Thunder proved last year, by winning a title, that they know what they&#8217;re doing. And when Game 1 was over, Thunder coach Mark Daigneault \u2014 as per his nature \u2014 was calm and cool.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI\u2019m never going to discredit an opponent when they come in here and win like that,\u201d Daigneault said. \u201cBut we have a lot of runway to improve. We have a lot of players that can play better. We collectively can play with more intentionality on both ends of the floor, certainly on the offensive end of the floor. We can play better collectively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">No matter what happens Wednesday, Daigneault will likely say the same thing after Game 2 as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cGame 2 is going to end and then we&#8217;ll need to be a better team in Game 3,\u201d Daigneault said. \u201cThat\u2019s how these work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Spurs have reasons to feel good, obviously: They&#8217;re up 1-0, and they hope they can get Fox back for Game 2. The Thunder, who got <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thunder-spurs-alex-caruso-nba-playoffs-7aba79387ce55150dc72d76de7fd58e3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">31 points from Alex Caruso<\/a> in the series opener, might not have reasons to feel good but they shouldn&#8217;t be in panic mode either: It&#8217;s highly unlikely that Gilgeous-Alexander (7 for 23 in Game 1) struggles that much from the field again anytime soon, and the minus-21 rebound differential \u2014 the team&#8217;s worst since November 2024 \u2014 can be easily addressed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThat\u2019s what this time of year is about,\u201d Gilgeous-Alexander said. \u201cIt\u2019s the highest level of basketball and you\u2019re going to find out exactly what type of player you are, what type of competitor you are and exactly what you need to get better at.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">___<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">AP NBA: <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/nba\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/apnews.com\/nba<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 The Associated Press.
