Why NYC wants you to participate in a new e-bike health study

The city’s transportation agency and New York University (NYU) announced Monday a partnership in a novel “E-Bike Health” study which city officials say they hope will help inform the future of two-wheel commuting in NYC.

The study, led by NYU professor Dr. Rumi Chunara, will look at cyclists who use e-bikes in the city, tracking their usage, routes, and health data throughout the project.

“We want to understand how e-bikes compare to conventional cycling and other modes of transportation when it comes to physical activity and cardiovascular health,” Chunara said. “For cyclists, this includes where you ride, what feels safe, and what keeps you from biking more often.”

The new research follows an increasing trend in cycling in NYC over the past decade. Today, more than 600,000 cycling trips are taken each day in the city — a 64% increase from the 380,000 daily trips recorded in 2013, according to NYC DOT.

Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn said the study will help the city better understand how expanding cycling infrastructure can improve both safety and public health outcomes while encouraging more New Yorkers to choose bikes over cars for short trips.

“E-bikes are increasingly popular among delivery workers, families, and other riders that benefit from an added boost while riding,” said Flynn. “We know we must do more to adapt our policies and street designs to keep riders safe, but also to understand the health benefits of these changes for all New Yorkers.”

But motorized versions of mechanical bicycles have caused public controversy over safety, with concerns over rising hospital visits and a lack of infrastructure to support the increasingly popular vehicles. Cycling advocates say safety concerns arise from underfunding and poor street planning, rather than from the safety of the bikes themselves.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani vowed to tackle the issue, focusing on faster, more accessible transportation across the city during his election campaign last year. In the recently released executive budget, he has proposed increasing the city’s transportation funding by $11.8 million to build new bike lanes over the next fiscal year.

Study leaders said that better research can lead to a better quality of life for all New Yorkers.

“Understanding how our streets can influence our choices can help create better health outcomes for all New Yorkers,” Chunara said.

The study will include three components: an online survey open through August 2026, in-person focus groups scheduled to begin this fall and a wearable fitness tracker study that will collect activity and health data from selected participants.

Regardless of ridership status, New Yorkers over 18 are eligible to take the 5-15 minute survey and stand a chance of winning a $100 dollar gift card in a monthly drawing. Some participants will then be invited to join the subsequent phases of the research study, taking part in the in-person focus group or the fitness tracking portion of the project.

The city’s transportation agency and New York University (NYU) announced Monday a partnership in a novel “E-Bike Health”…

[5122
5229,159187,1944,29652,34419,405,403,5226,5225,5228,5227,27756,254129,11900,67,586,132,5230,68,2969
post-808172","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-new-york","tag-america","tag-bike-safety","tag-cardiovascular-health","tag-e-bikes","tag-micromobility","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-newyork","tag-newyorkcity","tag-ny","tag-nyc","tag-nyc-dot","tag-research-study","tag-transit","tag-united-states","tag-united-states-of-america","tag-unitedstates","tag-unitedstatesofamerica","tag-us","tag-usa
["GET
