From an efficiency perspective, second-year Houston Rockets<\/a> guard Reed Sheppard wasn\u2019t at his best<\/a> in the two games he played at the NBA\u2019s 2025 summer league.<\/p>\n

Then again, it\u2019s a very small sample and the team around him was quite limited, as evidenced by its 1-4 record in Las Vegas. Sheppard was largely the focal point for opposing defenses throughout those two games.<\/p>\n

In the 2025-26 regular season, that shouldn\u2019t be the case when Sheppard plays alongside elite players such as Kevin Durant, Amen Thompson, and Alperen Sengun. And in that context, Sheppard might even be overqualified as a backup point guard behind Fred VanVleet.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, The Ringer\u2019s Michael Pina is listing Sheppard as a \u201cspotlight stealer\u201d from the recently completed summer league. His analysis<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Sheppard is a high-upside prospect on a contender who, for the time being, needs to excel off the bench as a movement shooter who handles the ball without turning it over. From what we\u2019ve seen this week, that\u2019s plenty doable.<\/p>\n

In the small-sample size confines of Las Vegas summer league, Sheppard\u2019s low efficiency is less of a concern than his raw production. Through two games, the 21-year-old scored 46 points in 61 minutes, attacking downhill, getting to his spots in the midrange, and generally looking comfortable with the ball in his hands. His athleticism popped a few times on defense, too, where Sheppard\u2019s instincts, relentlessness, and athleticism can shine. The Rockets don\u2019t need him to take over games this season, and as a backup point guard who\u2019s asked to run the show for a couple of stints every night, he may be overqualified.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
