The release of homicide victims\u2019 names is delayed by two weeks to allow time for the victims\u2019 families to be notified of a death by Chicago police.<\/p>\n<p>The homicide figures do not include killings that occurred in self-defense or in other circumstances not measured in Chicago police statistics. Homicide data from the Illinois State Police, which patrols the city\u2019s expressways, also is not included here.<\/p>\n<p>After a two-year spike during the pandemic and national outrage over police accountability, Chicago <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/criminal-justice\/ct-chicago-police-end-of-year-statistics-20230101-csik4prl5nbwjg5sv4bw75xj3y-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">began to see a decline<\/a> in homicides in 2022. Homicide and nonfatal shooting totals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/criminal-justice\/ct-cpd-year-end-20240101-czl3beotkjbtrc42y3y5z2gzgq-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fell again<\/a> in 2023, but the city was roiled by robbery and carjacking crews responsible for an overall uptick in violence.
