OSF HealthCare St. Mary Medical Center marked a major milestone Tuesday, holding a Blessing & Dedication for a newly expanded emergency department that has already cut the time for patients to see a provider by 30%.<\/p>\n
The expansion adds 7,000 square feet and six new patient care rooms to the Galesburg hospital\u2019s emergency department. OSF HealthCare leaders, physicians, staff, and community partners gathered Tuesday to celebrate the opening.<\/p>\n
Chris Postin with Galesburg In Focus sat down with Dr. Nathaniel Baker, managing medical director of emergency medicine at OSF St. Mary, to discuss the expansion in detail. Listen to the full interview below.<\/p>\n
Why the expansion was needed<\/p>\n
The closure of Cottage Hospital several years ago forced OSF St. Mary to absorb an entire community\u2019s patient volume in a facility not built for that capacity. The emergency department\u2019s 14 patient care rooms were never designed to handle the load \u2014 and the result was a persistent \u201cboarding\u201d problem, where patients waited days in the ER for an available inpatient bed.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe took a community that had two hospitals close by and tried to compact all those people into one area that wasn\u2019t built for that,\u201d Baker said.<\/p>\n
OSF St. Mary has historically had some of the most significant boarding challenges within the OSF system. The expansion addresses that directly.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s new

In addition to six new patient care rooms, the expansion includes a second triage room that allows Advanced Practice Providers to begin evaluating patients from the waiting room \u2014 ordering labs and imaging before a patient even reaches a treatment room.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis change ensures patients\u2019 care can move forward even while in the waiting room,\u201d Baker said.<\/p>\n
The waiting and registration areas were also redesigned for a more direct, intuitive flow. Patients are now greeted immediately upon entering the department.<\/p>\n
OSF St. Mary President Zach Yoder said the expansion reflects the hospital\u2019s long-term commitment to the region.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis dedication is about more than growth,\u201d Yoder said. \u201cIt is about strengthening our ability to serve the community with compassion, excellence and readiness for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n
Behavioral health rooms<\/p>\n
Among the most significant additions are two rooms being renovated specifically for behavioral health patients \u2014 those who are a danger to themselves or others. The rooms feature retractable shutters that lock away medical equipment to prevent self-harm, and include an adjoining restroom with a safe shower.<\/p>\n
Baker said the volume of behavioral health patients at OSF St. Mary reflects a national crisis that hits Galesburg particularly hard.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just really a reflection of what\u2019s going on with mental health in the country as a whole,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd we\u2019re one of the communities where we see it a bit more than most other places.\u201d<\/p>\n
Advanced cardiac technology<\/p>\n
The hospital is also adding advanced CT scanning technology tied to expanded cardiology services. The technology allows physicians to identify cardiac arterial blockages through imaging \u2014 a capability previously requiring transfer to Peoria, Rockford, or Bloomington.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt could be the difference of going three hours out of your way or staying locally,\u201d Baker said. \u201cAnd also getting care within 24 hours versus sometimes waiting two or three days.\u201d<\/p>\n
The community garden<\/p>\n
Beyond the walls of the hospital, Baker oversees a one-acre community garden on the OSF St. Mary campus that produced 6,000 pounds of organic produce in its first year. This year\u2019s harvest will be donated to local food pantries.
