They write with it, eat with it, throw with it, greet strangers with it, and build tools around the assumption that most other people will do the same, much to the irritation of left-handed people.<\/p>\n<p>Among primates, this is strange.<\/p>\n<p>Chimpanzees, gorillas, monkeys and other apes may favor one hand for certain tasks. Some individuals show strong preferences. But no other primate species shows the same overwhelming, population-wide tilt to the right. Why did one hand become so dominant in a lineage famous for using both?<\/p>\n<p>A new study says humans may be right-handed because our ancestors first stood upright, freeing their hands from walking, and then evolved larger brains that reinforced one-sided control of fine movements.<\/p>\n<p>The Right-Hand Bias<\/p>\n<p>About 90 percent of people across cultures favor the right hand, a pattern that appears to have deep roots in prehistory.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have proposed many explanations. Perhaps tool use pushed one hand into dominance. Perhaps social learning made children copy the same hand preference. Perhaps the roots lie in language, because language and hand control both involve specialized brain circuits.<\/p>\n<p>The new study tried to weigh these ideas together rather than one at a time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first study to test several of the major hypotheses for human handedness in a single framework,\u201d Dr. Thomas A. By looking across many primate species, we can begin to understand which aspects of handedness are ancient and shared, and which are uniquely human.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To do this, the team separated handedness into two questions. First, does a species lean left or right? Second, how strong is that preference?<\/p>\n<p>Many primates have strong individual hand preferences. But those preferences often cancel out at the population level, the researchers learned. Some individuals lean left, others right. Humans are different because the whole species leans strongly in one direction.<\/p>\n<p>The Moment Humans Stopped Looking Like an Outlier<\/p>\n<p>The research analyzed handedness across 2,025 individuals from 41 species of monkeys and apes. Then they built a model using this data to estimate what level of handedness a species like Homo sapiens should have, given its place on the primate family tree.<\/p>\n<p>The model predicted that humans should have little or no consistent right-hand bias. The model is obviously wrong. <\/p>\n<p>So, the researchers then asked whether that difference between model prediction and reality could be explained by traits that make humans physically unusual. They added two traits. One was brain size (endocranial volume), and the other was the intermembral index, a measure of the relative length of arms and legs. Humans have long legs and shorter arms compared with many other primates, which reflects our bipedal locomotion.<\/p>\n<p>Those traits changed the result. Once the model accounted for humans\u2019 unusually large brains and unusually bipedal bodies, our handedness no longer looked like a statistical anomaly. The model\u2019s prediction moved close to the real human value.<\/p>\n<p>That does not mean the study has found a single cause. Evolution rarely works that neatly. But it suggests that right-handedness emerged from the same broad transformation that made humans human: an upright body and an expanding brain.<\/p>\n<p>Walking on two legs changed what hands were for. They no longer had to serve primarily as supports for climbing or locomotion. They could carry food, shape stone, hold infants, gesture, throw, make tools and manipulate objects with increasing precision.<\/p>\n<p>Later, as the brain grew and reorganized, those manual behaviors may have become more strongly lateralized.<\/p>\n<p>What Fossil Relatives May Have Done with Their Hands<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.zmescience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/chart-handedness.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"725\" alt=\"Graph showing the variation in handedness seen in different hominid species\" class=\"wp-image-304564 perfmatters-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/chart-handedness-1024x725.jpg\"  data-\/><\/a>MHI measures whether a group tends to favor the left or right hand, while MABSHI measures how strong that hand preference is, regardless of whether it is left or right.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers also used their models to estimate handedness in extinct human relatives. These estimates are indirect, but they offer a timeline for how right-handedness may have intensified.<\/p>\n<p>Early hominins such as Ardipithecus ramidus and Australopithecus afarensis probably had only mild rightward preferences. Their handedness may have looked closer to that of modern great apes than to ours.<\/p>\n<p>The shift became stronger with the genus Homo. The model predicted increasing rightward bias in Homo ergaster, Homo erectus and Neanderthals. By the time we reach Homo sapiens, the preference becomes extreme.<\/p>\n<p>One species did not follow the pattern. Homo floresiensis, the small-bodied \u201chobbit\u201d from Indonesia, showed a much weaker predicted right-hand preference. H. floresiensis had a small brain and a body that retained traits associated with climbing as well as walking upright.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, being in the genus Homo was not enough. The strongest right-handedness seems to have emerged where larger brains and more specialized bipedal bodies came together.<\/p>\n<p>Culture May Have Finished the Job<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not to say that culture doesn\u2019t play any role in this matter. Children grow up in worlds designed largely by and for right-handed people. Writing systems, classroom habits, tools, musical instruments, sports training and social imitation can all reinforce one side.<\/p>\n<p>But culture probably did not create the pattern from nothing. No known human society is predominantly left-handed, and right-handedness appears across cultures. The better explanation may be that biology created a strong tendency, and culture helped stabilize and perhaps amplify it.<\/p>\n<p>The work also leaves another question unresolved: why left-handedness persists at all. <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/genetics\/understanding\/traits\/handedness\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Genetics contributes<\/a> to handedness, but there is no single gene for being right- or left-handed. Some researchers have suggested that left-handedness may survive because rarity can be useful in competitive settings, such as fighting or sports. Others point to the complexity of brain development, where variation is expected.<\/p>\n<p>The new study does not settle those debates. Instead, it reframes handedness as part of a larger evolutionary story.<\/p>\n<p>The right hand did not become dominant simply because humans made tools, or because language rewired the brain, or because children copied their parents. It likely became dominant because our ancestors\u2019 bodies changed first. They stood up. Their hands were freed. Their brains expanded.
