{"id":810041,"date":"2026-05-20T14:42:18","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T14:42:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/810041\/"},"modified":"2026-05-20T14:42:18","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T14:42:18","slug":"russian-army-preparing-appropriate-response-after-latvia-accused-of-hosting-ukrainian-drones-kremlin-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/810041\/","title":{"rendered":"Russian Army Preparing \u2018Appropriate\u2019 Response After Latvia Accused of Hosting Ukrainian Drones, Kremlin Says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Russia\u2019s military is preparing an \u201cappropriate\u201d response to Ukraine\u2019s alleged use of Baltic territory to launch drone attacks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov<a href=\"https:\/\/iz.ru\/2100374\/2026-05-20\/peskov-prokommentiroval-soobshcheniia-o-podgotovke-vsu-udarov-po-rf-iz-latvii\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> said<\/a> Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis problem exists, and our relevant services, primarily the military in this case, are closely monitoring the situation and formulating our country\u2019s necessary response,\u201d Peskov <a href=\"https:\/\/iz.ru\/2100374\/2026-05-20\/peskov-prokommentiroval-soobshcheniia-o-podgotovke-vsu-udarov-po-rf-iz-latvii\" title=\"told\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> the pro-Kremlin tabloid Izvestia, though he did not specify the scope of the measures.<\/p>\n<p>The warning comes a day after Russia\u2019s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) on Tuesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoscowtimes.com\/2026\/05\/19\/russias-spy-agency-claims-ukraine-plans-to-launch-drone-attacks-from-latvia-a92787\" title=\"threatened\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">threatened<\/a> Latvia, stating its NATO membership would not \u201cprotect\u201d it from Moscow\u2019s retaliation for Riga allegedly allowing Ukraine to fire drones from inside its borders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Latvia\u2019s foreign minister accused the SVR of running a disinformation campaign amid an internal political crisis triggered by Ukrainian drones straying into Latvian airspace and crashing.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Deputy Representative to the UN Tammy Bruce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2026\/may\/19\/europe-ukraine-russia-belarus-nuclear-drills-un-security-council-eu-us-hungary-peter-magyar-poland-nato-latest-news-updates\" title=\"said\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> that \u201cthere is no place for threats\u201d against Latvia, assuring member states that Washington \u201ckeeps all of its NATO commitments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also on Tuesday, Estonia\u2019s defense ministry said a NATO jet shot down a Ukrainian drone after it entered Estonian airspace, marking the first such interception in the Baltics since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>NATO\u2019s Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, American General Alexus Grynkewich, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2026\/may\/19\/europe-ukraine-russia-belarus-nuclear-drills-un-security-council-eu-us-hungary-peter-magyar-poland-nato-latest-news-updates\" title=\"said\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> that the downing disproved Russia\u2019s claim that Ukraine was launching drones from within the borders of the military alliance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we were allowing drones to go through Baltic airspace in order to get to Russia, we wouldn\u2019t be shooting them down,\u201d Grynkewich said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a drone alert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lrt.lt\/en\/news-in-english\/19\/2934073\/air-alert-in-vilnius-lifted-following-drone-sighting-in-border-regions\" title=\"issued\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">issued<\/a> by Lithuania\u2019s defense ministry on Wednesday brought transportation in parts of the country to a standstill and forced residents of the capital, Vilnius, into underground shelters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The alert, which was later lifted, marked the first time since the 2022 invasion that such a warning applied to both Lithuanian political leaders and the general public.<\/p>\n<p>Air alerts have become increasingly common in the Baltic states due to intensified Ukrainian strikes targeting Russian sites in the nearby Leningrad region and St. Petersburg.
