In some subluminal cases, the authors argued, a warp bubble could be described using positive energy rather than the exotic negative energy that has haunted the idea since Miguel Alcubierre\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.if.ufrj.br\/~mbr\/warp\/alcubierre\/cq940501.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:famous 1994 proposal;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;famous 1994 proposal&quot;}\" class=\"link \">famous 1994 proposal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">To best understand what the breakthrough means, you\u2019ll need a quick crash course on the far-out idea of traveling through folded space\u2014because warp drive has always sounded cleaner in science fiction than it does in general relativity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The colloquial term \u201cwarp drive\u201d comes from science fiction, most famously Star Trek. Star Trek suggests that this extraordinary power alone pushes the ship at faster-than-light speeds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Scientists have been studying and theorizing about faster-than-light space travel for decades. One major reason for our interest is pure pragmatism: without warp drive, we\u2019re probably never making it to a neighboring star system. The closest such trip is still four years long at light speed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The modern physics version dates to 1994, when Alcubierre, a theoretical physicist, proposed what became known as the Alcubierre drive. His idea worked inside Einstein\u2019s general relativity by changing the geometry around the craft. Spacetime expands behind the ship and contracts in front of it. To an outside observer, that bubble could appear to move faster than light even though the ship locally stays inside the rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Essentially, an Alcubierre drive would expend a tremendous amount of energy\u2014likely more than what\u2019s available within the universe and, more awkwardly, negative energy\u2014to contract and twist space-time in front of it and create a bubble. Inside that bubble would be an inertial reference frame where explorers would feel no proper acceleration. The rules of physics would still apply within the bubble, but the ship would be localized outside of space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">For years, the negative-energy requirement was the bugaboo. Alcubierre\u2019s original concept was mathematically allowed, but it demanded the kind of matter and energy budget no one knows how to supply. Earlier this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/energy\/a70407892\/warp-drive-physics-explained\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Alcubierre told Pop Mech;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;Alcubierre told Pop Mech&quot;}\" class=\"link \">Alcubierre told Pop Mech<\/a> that a roughly 100-meter bubble moving at light speed would require on the order of 100 Jupiter masses converted into negative energy, and he called a practical warp drive \u201cvery unlikely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"warp propulsion\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"960\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/b8dec44038245e9cad8db3a459315ead.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Applied Physics<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That\u2019s why Bobrick and Martire\u2019s 2021 paper drew so much attention. The authors, working with <a href=\"https:\/\/appliedphysics.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Applied Physics;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;Applied Physics&quot;}\" class=\"link \">Applied Physics<\/a>, described what they called \u201cphysical warp drives\u201d: spacetime-bubble geometries that could be discussed using known general relativity, without automatically invoking the classic Alcubierre setup. Physical, of course, doesn\u2019t mean buildable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The study is understandably pretty thick (<a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2102.06824.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:read the whole thing here;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;read the whole thing here&quot;}\" class=\"link \">read the whole thing here<\/a>), but here\u2019s the gist of the model: Instead of treating a warp drive as a ship somehow moving through spacetime, treat the bubble itself as the object under study. In that framework, the authors argued that some subluminal warp-drive classes could use positive energy, at least in principle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While newer research hasn\u2019t killed the idea of a physical warp drive, it\u2019s certainly thrown some cold water on it. In a 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2512.18008\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:peer-reviewed paper,;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;peer-reviewed paper,&quot;}\" class=\"link \">peer-reviewed paper,<\/a> Jos\u00e9 Rodal described a warp-drive spacetime with predominantly positive invariant energy density and reduced energy-condition deficits.
