PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — This week on FYI Philly, we’re celebrating Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial start to America’s 250th birthday summer!<\/p>\n
You can enjoy delicious beers and barbecue at Love City Brewing’s<\/strong> new location on Main Street in Manayunk.<\/p>\n The restaurant\/brewery serves up regular and non-alcoholic beers and cocktails, and the owners have partnered with the highly popular Sophie’s Barbecue in Havertown for the food menu.<\/p>\n Love City Manayunk<\/a> | Facebook<\/a> | Instagram<\/a><\/strong> Winterthur Museum, Garden, and Library<\/strong> is celebrating it’s 75th anniversary, commemorating the year Henry Francis duPont opened the family home of three generations as a museum.<\/p>\n He had been collecting American decorative arts — and curating the gardens all around Winterthur — since the 1920s, with the intention of opening it to the public.<\/p>\n The property consists of a decorative arts museum, a 60-acre wild garden, and a pre-eminent research library. The vast collection consists of over 90,000 objects in all mediums, all materials, and things that would have been used every day.<\/p>\n On view are items related to some of the most noted names in early American history, including Paul Revere, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson.<\/p>\n Current tours include the self-paced ‘An American Legacy’ that talks about Winterthur’s 75th anniversary, as well as the celebration of America’s 250th.<\/p>\n A new exhibition titled ‘At Home At Winterthur’ opens May 23 and looks at the people and community that made Winterthur what it is today.<\/p>\n Visitors can also take guided tours, including ‘Architecture of Independence’ that includes elements from buildings in the original 13 colonies, from facades to the dramatic Montmorenci staircase.<\/p>\n Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library<\/a> | Facebook<\/a> | Instagram<\/a><\/strong> The Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History<\/strong> is shining a light on an important historical event with an exhibition of the same name called, “The First Salute.”<\/a><\/p>\n “It tells the largely overlooked story of Jewish contribution and involvement in the American Revolution, both here in America and on a small Caribbean island called St. Eustatius,” says Dan Tadmor, President and CEO of The Weitzman.<\/p>\n On November 16, 1776, the first international recognition of the United States started off with a bang.<\/p>\n “What we call ‘The First Salute’ actually happened by cannons talking to each other,” says Dr. Josh Perelman, curator of “The First Salute” and senior advisor for content and strategy at The Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History. “When a ship called the Andrew Doria sailed into St. Eustatius Harbor.”<\/p>\n The Continental Navy ship fired a 13-gun salute and the Dutch island responded with a traditional welcome.<\/p>\n “The Jews on St. Eustatius really participated in what was a throughway of gunpowder, munitions and other supplies from European allies,” says Perelman.<\/p>\n With no promise the Revolution would succeed, he says “these people put their lives and livelihoods at risk.”<\/p>\n Just over 100 objects are on view, over five sections in the museum.<\/p>\n “The First Salute: An Untold Story of the American Revolution” is on view through April of 2027 at The Weitzman, and it does require a special ticket. <\/a><\/p>\n The Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History<\/a> | “The First Salute: An Untold Story of the American Revolution”<\/a> | Link to Tickets<\/a><\/strong> Roselyn Gonzalez opened restaurant Carmen’s Table<\/strong> with her daughter and son in Glendora, New Jersey.<\/p>\n They offer smoked barbecue that highlights their Puerto Rican roots. Their biggest seller is the pork platter, which comes with sweet plantains, rice and peas, and a side salad.<\/p>\n For dessert, they offer the popular custard called flan and freshly made drinks such as lemonade and pi\u00f1a coladas.<\/p>\n After years of partnerships, Roselyn decided to open something of her own with her kids and turned to her passion for cooking.<\/p>\n The restaurant pays homage to her mother, Carmen, through her recipes; she remembers her sharing in her childhood neighborhood in Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n Roselyn takes pride in sharing healthy and affordable meals with her family.<\/p>\n Carmen’s Table | Instagram <\/a>|Facebook<\/a><\/strong> A Philadelphia attorney’s side project has grown into a fast-spreading regional condiment brand, with bottles of “Jawndiments”<\/a> now appearing in restaurants, big-box retailers and grocery stores across several states.<\/p>\n Jason Barr, who created the sauces, said he produces the blends in partnership with Fishtown Seafood.<\/p>\n “We make the gallons here at Fishtown Seafood. We take our cherry peppers, we blend them up, mix it all together,” he said. “Same thing with the long hots. There’s a few other things in the long hot, like some vinegar and some sugar to really balance out the flavors.”<\/p>\n Barr said he first came up with the idea in 2018.<\/p>\n “I was making burgers in my apartment in Fairmount, whipped up some blended cherry peppers with some mayo, put it on the burgers and just kind of like a light bulb moment,” he said.<\/p>\n By 2022, the brand had a name: Jawndiments. Two years later, Barr introduced a second flavor, the long hots. He said the sauces work well on sandwiches, salads and snacks.<\/p>\n “It’s great on sandwiches. It’s chicken salad, tuna salad, egg salad, dipping, french fries, pretzels,” he said. “If you go to a Center City pretzel company, you can get a pretzel, a cup of cherry pepper mayo to dip your pretzels into it.”<\/p>\n Jawndiments<\/a> | Where To Find<\/a> | Instagram<\/a> <\/strong><\/p>\n Longwood Gardens<\/strong> fountain season blends the art of horticulture with the brilliance of incredible aqua performances. With more than 400 acres of cultivated property a trip to Longwood is a great escape with nature.<\/p>\n The fountain season runs through October with daily performances during the day and illuminated performances on weekend evenings. Throughout the summer there are special fountain performances that include musical themes and fireworks.<\/p>\n The bonsai courtyard has become one of Longwood’s most popular areas. From May 27-June 15, 2026 Longwood is hosting its first Satsuki Azalea Bonsai Show. In the Exhibition Hall of the Main Conservatory there will be up tot 40 Satsuki Azalea bonsais on display. The flowering tree is one of the most beautiful bonsais and the blooming season is fleeting with a range of colors and styles on exhibit.<\/p>\n There is another bonsai event June 24-29. The Longwood Gardens Bonsai Festival is a 6-day event welcoming bonsai clubs with exhibits, a juried selection of trees along with vendors and educational opportunities.<\/p>\n Longwood Gardens Carillon is celebrating 25 years. One of three resident instruments on the property, the Carillon has 62 bells and is played throughout the day creating the soundscape of the gardens. Located in the historic chimes tower, the sound of the chimes ring through the property.
