The vast collection consists of over 90,000 objects in all mediums, all materials, and things that would have been used every day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">On view are items related to some of the most noted names in early American history, including Paul Revere, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Current tours include the self-paced &#8216;An American Legacy&#8217; that talks about Winterthur&#8217;s 75th anniversary, as well as the celebration of America&#8217;s 250th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">A new exhibition titled &#8216;At Home At Winterthur&#8217; says Dan Tadmor, President and CEO of The Weitzman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">On November 16, 1776, the first international recognition of the United States started off with a bang.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;What we call &#8216;The First Salute&#8217; actually happened by cannons talking to each other,&#8221; says Dr. Josh Perelman, curator of &#8220;The First Salute&#8221; and senior advisor for content and strategy at The Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History. &#8220;When a ship called the Andrew Doria sailed into St. Eustatius Harbor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The Continental Navy ship fired a 13-gun salute and the Dutch island responded with a traditional welcome.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;The Jews on St. Eustatius really participated in what was a throughway of gunpowder, munitions and other supplies from European allies,&#8221; says Perelman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">With no promise the Revolution would succeed, he says &#8220;these people put their lives and livelihoods at risk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Just over 100 objects are on view, over five sections in the museum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;The First Salute: An Untold Story of the American Revolution&#8221; We take our cherry peppers, we blend them up, mix it all together,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Same thing with the long hots. There&#8217;s a few other things in the long hot, like some vinegar and some sugar to really balance out the flavors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Barr said he first came up with the idea in 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;I was making burgers in my apartment in Fairmount, whipped up some blended cherry peppers with some mayo, put it on the burgers and just kind of like a light bulb moment,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">By 2022, the brand had a name: Jawndiments. Two years later, Barr introduced a second flavor, the long hots. He said the sauces work well on sandwiches, salads and snacks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;It&#8217;s great on sandwiches. With more than 400 acres of cultivated property a trip to Longwood is a great escape with nature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The fountain season runs through October with daily performances during the day and illuminated performances on weekend evenings. Throughout the summer there are special fountain performances that include musical themes and fireworks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The bonsai courtyard has become one of Longwood&#8217;s most popular areas. From May 27-June 15, 2026 Longwood is hosting its first Satsuki Azalea Bonsai Show. In the Exhibition Hall of the Main Conservatory there will be up tot 40 Satsuki Azalea bonsais on display. The flowering tree is one of the most beautiful bonsais and the blooming season is fleeting with a range of colors and styles on exhibit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">There is another bonsai event June 24-29. The Longwood Gardens Bonsai Festival is a 6-day event welcoming bonsai clubs with exhibits, a juried selection of trees along with vendors and educational opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Longwood Gardens Carillon is celebrating 25 years. One of three resident instruments on the property, the Carillon has 62 bells and is played throughout the day creating the soundscape of the gardens. Located in the historic chimes tower, the sound of the chimes ring through the property.
