New Yorkers will have a few more months to get their mandatory \u201cNYC Official\u201d trash bins, DSNY says.<\/p>\n

The city backed off an enforcement deadline Wednesday<\/a> that would require building owners to move to a new, \u201cNYC Official\u201d trash bin by June 1.<\/p>\n After concerns over supply disruptions, Department of Sanitation (DSNY) officials announced that the agency would only issue warnings through Labor Day for buildings that have not yet acquired the new bin.<\/p>\n \u201cCome this fall, you\u2019ll have no excuse to use your old, gross trash bin,\u201d said DSNY Commissioner Gregory Anderson in a social media announcement.\n<\/p>\n The bins were introduced two years ago<\/a> as part of former Mayor Eric Adams\u2019 \u201ctrash revolution,\u201d but building owners reported struggling to find them<\/a> ahead of the June 1 deadline and amid worries about being fined between $50 and $200 for violations.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve gotten a whole bunch of calls with people with a lot of questions about the garbage pail situation,\u201d said City Council Member Frank Morano (R-Staten Island).\n<\/p>\n The \u201cNYC Official\u201d garbage containers, which are mandatory for residential buildings with up to nine units, aim to keep the city\u2019s sanitation woes\u2014and rats\u2014 in check.\n<\/p>\n Buildings have been required to place their trash bags in a garbage bin since last year, but now the \u201cNYC Official\u201d bin will reign supreme. Qualifying buildings can use the special bin only after Sept. 7.<\/p>\n Sanitation officials said that the new bins were designed to be more durable, affordable and make it more difficult for rats to get inside. All of the bins are also compatible with mechanical arms the city said it would install on sanitation trucks.<\/p>\n \u201cI ran for City Council on four simple words: \u2018Clean the damn streets,’\u201d said Bronx City Council Member and Chair of the Committee on Sanitation and Solid Waste Justin Sanchez. \u201cThese NYC bins will bring cleaner streets, safer trash collection and fewer rats.\u201d<\/p>\n New Yorkers who still need to purchase a bin, which costs around $50, can find them through Home Depot, or through Instacart, Uber Eats, or DoorDash.
