Not since Alan Greenspan in 1987 has a Fed Chair been sworn in at the White House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Warsh mentioned Greenspan as he addressed the roomful of dignitaries, including several members of President Trump\u2019s cabinet, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and even former Vice President Dan Quayle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Greenspan, he said, &#8220;was the first to tell me and show me what this role demands.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">\u2018I intend to fill the role of chairman with energy and purpose,\u201d Warsh said, adding that he will lead a \u201creform-oriented Fed Reserve,\u201d foreshadowing foundational changes that may be ahead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The US Senate confirmed Warsh as chairman on May 13 in a 54-45 vote, with one Democrat \u2014 John Fetterman of Pennsylvania \u2014 joining all Republicans to place Trump\u2019s nominee atop the central bank after more than a year of unprecedented pressure from the White House for lower interest rates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">But economic conditions have shifted sharply since Trump nominated Warsh in January. The war in Iran has created an oil price shock that is rippling through the global economy and pushing inflation back up. The job market, meanwhile, shows signs of stabilizing \u2014 all of which undermines the case for rate cuts the president badly wants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Trump addressed that looming issue in his remarks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">\u201cI want Kevin to be totally independent,\u201d Trump said, then turned directly to his nominee. \u201cDon&#8217;t look at me, don&#8217;t look at anybody, just do your own thing and do a great job.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Warsh will serve as chair for four years. He viewed tariffs as one-time drivers of price increases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">That was all before the Iran war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">During his confirmation hearing, Warsh said the US economy is still dealing with ripples from a pandemic-driven spike in inflation and that the Fed needs a different framework for assessing it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The Fed\u2019s preferred inflation gauge \u2014 the Personal Consumption Expenditures index \u2014 offers only a rough take, Warsh said, even when volatile food and energy prices are excluded. He favors \u201ctrimmed averages\u201d of inflation that remove outlier data. Energy prices accounted for 40% of the increase, while shelter and food also surged. Stripping out energy and food prices, inflation on a \u201ccore\u201d basis clocked in at 2.8%, up from 2.6%.
