After two popular Houston bakeries were broken into the same night, their owners say they\u2019re now questioning whether neighborhood shops are being targeted again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Allan Hursig, owner of The Bearded Baker in the Heights, was jolted awake in the middle of the night on Thursday, not by a call or a text, but surveillance footage of burglars making a beeline for his cash register.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt was just like you\u2019ve got to be kidding me. Again? And now?\u201d Hursig said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">It was the fourth time his bakery had been broken into.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\"\/><\/ul>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI don\u2019t know if they\u2019re hitting bakeries, small businesses. I don\u2019t know if economy is pushing people to go back to this, cause when we were hit earlier, it was around COVID times,\u201d Hursig said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The break-in came at an especially difficult time. Hursig was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer and started chemotherapy just one day before the burglary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI try to look at the positive because it doesn\u2019t bring me down as much,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Still, he admits the break-in added another layer of stress at a time he\u2019s already fighting through so much.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Bearded Baker wasn\u2019t the only shop targeted that night. About 25 minutes away in West University Place, Michael\u2019s Cookie Jar was burglarized just an hour later, and a safe containing about $250 was taken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI think they\u2019re connected, definitely, they\u2019re wearing the same clothes. And you can tell their builds are very similar, so yeah definitely,\u201d Savino said.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\"\/><\/ul>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Both owners provided information to the Houston Police Department to help determine for sure whether the cases are connected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Citywide data tells a different story than what these owners are living. Burglaries across Houston are down about 20% this year compared to last year. In the Heights, they\u2019re down about 6%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">But for Savino, the statistics don\u2019t match what he\u2019s seeing on the ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI mean in our plaza, there\u2019s been one or two break-ins this past week,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Both owners are now asking whether small businesses are being targeted again, similar to what happened during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Now, both owners say they\u2019re changing security protocols and daily routines, hoping it\u2019s enough to keep them from becoming targets again.
