{"id":816039,"date":"2026-05-23T04:07:30","date_gmt":"2026-05-23T04:07:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/816039\/"},"modified":"2026-05-23T04:07:30","modified_gmt":"2026-05-23T04:07:30","slug":"mets-quiet-bats-spoil-patchwork-pitching-strategy-in-loss-to-marlins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/816039\/","title":{"rendered":"Mets&#8217; quiet bats spoil patchwork pitching strategy in loss to Marlins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MIAMI \u2014 The Mets\u2019 patchwork pitching plan worked out just fine Friday night, but a sputtering lineup couldn\u2019t help the cause.<\/p>\n<p>After scoring just two runs in Washington a day earlier and escaping with a victory, the Mets went backward. <\/p>\n<p>Juan Soto homered in the first inning and silence followed for the Mets in a 2-1 loss to the Marlins.<\/p>\n<p>The Mets, who had only four base-runners, wasted a solid pitching performance from Tobias Myers, Sean Manaea and Jonah Tong, who combined to limit the Marlins to five hits. <\/p>\n<p>Tong <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/22\/sports\/mets-cut-craig-kimbrel-bring-up-jonah-tong-as-youth-infusion-continues\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse<\/a> before the game, with Craig Kimbrel designated for assignment.<\/p>\n<p>Soto had the Mets\u2019 only two hits (he also singled in the fourth) until A.J. Ewing\u2019s single in the eighth. <\/p>\n<p>But Ewing was thrown out attempting to steal second for the final out. <\/p>\n<p>In the ninth, Carson Benge drew a two-out walk from Pete Fairbanks before Bo Bichette was retired.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been playing a good baseball the last couple of days,\u201d Soto said. \u201cI feel like we scored a good amount of runs in D.C., and before that we took care of business [at home]. We have been doing well. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Eury P\u00e9rez\u2019s heat created much of the Mets\u2019 angst, but the right-hander also entered the day with a 5.33 ERA. <\/p>\n<p>He toyed with the Mets over 6 \u00b9\/\u2083 innings before the Marlins\u2019 bullpen finished strong, with five strikeouts over the final 2 \u00b2\/\u2083 frames.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou take the positive, obviously it\u2019s not what you want as far as the results,\u201d manager Carlos Mendoza said. \u201cBut on a night we went in there trying to piece it together there was a lot of good things from the pitching staff. We just didn\u2019t get anything other than a couple of at-bats from Soto, a couple of hard-hit balls from Benge. Other than that, we couldn\u2019t put together anything against Perez.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Soto\u2019s fourth home run in as many games gave the Mets a 1-0 lead in the first inning. <\/p>\n<p>Soto\u2019s 449-foot blast to right-center against P\u00e9rez continued a sizzling stretch for the All-Star outfielder, who began the day with a 1.357 OPS over his previous eight games.<\/p>\n<p>Soto\u2019s thunder included a two-homer game on Wednesday in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>Tobias Myers, as the opener, worked 1 \u00b9\/\u2083 innings and allowed one earned run.<\/p>\n<p>Esteury Ruiz doubled and stole third, before he scored on Owen Caissie\u2019s ground out. <\/p>\n<p>Myers served as an opener for a second time this season.<\/p>\n<p>New York Mets relief pitcher Jonah Tong (21) delivers a pitch against the Miami Marlins during the sixth inning at loanDepot Park.
