{"id":816229,"date":"2026-05-23T06:05:23","date_gmt":"2026-05-23T06:05:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/816229\/"},"modified":"2026-05-23T06:05:23","modified_gmt":"2026-05-23T06:05:23","slug":"ustr-greer-sees-no-immediate-chip-tariffs-but-says-protection-important-for-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/816229\/","title":{"rendered":"USTR Greer sees no immediate chip tariffs but says protection important for sector"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">By David Shepardson and David Lawder<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">MANASSAS, Virginia, May 22 (Reuters) &#8211; U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said on Friday there were no imminent new U.S. \u200ctariffs expected to be imposed on semiconductors, but that it was important \u200cto protect the sector with duties to facilitate reshoring of chip production.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Greer, speaking at a Micron Technology \u200bmemory chip plant expansion project in the Washington, D.C., suburbs, said that any tariffs USTR&#8217;s long-awaited Section 232 national security investigation aimed at protecting the U.S. semiconductor sector needed to be properly sequenced to promote U.S. output.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">&#8220;Having tariffs on semiconductors is really important. \u200cWhat&#8217;s even more important than \u2060having protection for facilities like this is making sure we do it on the right timing and in the right amount,&#8221; \u2060Greer said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">&#8220;There was not an immediate tariff coming,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">In January, the Trump administration noted the United States fully manufactures only approximately 10% of the chips it requires, making it \u200bheavily \u200breliant on foreign supply chains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">&#8220;These are complex supply \u200bchains. We&#8217;ve seen offshoring of \u200csemiconductors for decades,&#8221; Greer said, adding the government wants to ensure there are no immediate tariffs on companies that are producing semiconductors, and will allow companies to import an unspecified amount during that &#8220;reshoring phase.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">In June, Micron said it was expanding its U.S. investments by $30 billion.
