As part of that commitment, we make proactive decisions including temporarily pausing aspects of our service,\u201d a Waymo spokesperson said. \u201cWe know riders count on us to get around, and we appreciate their patience as we work to get them where they\u2019re going safely and reliably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azfamily.com\/2025\/11\/12\/waymo-begins-rides-phoenix-area-freeways\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.azfamily.com\/2025\/11\/12\/waymo-begins-rides-phoenix-area-freeways\/\">Waymo began offering rides on Phoenix freeways back in November, 2025. <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">For some riders, using a driverless car is a new experience. One rider said it was kind of interesting and compared it to the Jetsons. For others, it has become the go-to way to get around.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Andrew Maynard, who has been tracking autonomous vehicle technology across the country, said the move should not cause concern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cI think it\u2019s a healthy indication that Waymo paying very close attention to what\u2019s happening, and they\u2019re acting fairly fast when it looks like things aren\u2019t happening the way they thought,\u201d Maynard said. \u201cThe one little frisson of concern, of course, is that if you\u2019re a user of Waymo, you expect it to be safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Maynard said the technology has come a long way in a short amount of time, though he personally finds it a downer that he can no longer take Waymo along the freeway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there have been 39 Waymo-related crashes in Arizona so far this year, after 96 reported last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Despite those numbers, one rider said he still feels safer in a driverless car than with a human behind the wheel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text text-start\">See a spelling or grammatical error in our story? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azfamily.com\/page\/send-us-your-feedback\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Please click here to report it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text text-start\">Do you have a photo or video of a breaking news story?
