Swedish Defense Minister P\u00e5l Jonson warned against inserting a \u201cEuropean preference\u201d into EU defense procurement rules.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy responsibility, first and foremost, is to get weapons in the hands of these warfighters<\/a>,\u201d Jonson said on Saturday. \u201cSometimes that can be from Europeans, sometimes it can be from the Americans or somewhere it can be from Asia.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jonson\u2019s warning landed weeks after Thomas DiNanno, the U.S. under secretary of state for arms control, traveled to Poland, Romania and Estonia. The State Department said<\/a> his Warsaw meetings with U.S. industry representatives included discussions on \u201cEU defense protectionism\u201d and the \u201cAmerica First Arms Transfer Strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Romanian Foreign Minister Oana \u021aoiu also framed the balance between equipping troops and building up local defense industries<\/a>. \u201cLocalization was very important, investment in jobs at home was very important,\u201d she said on Saturday.<\/p>\n

But Bucharest also wants to \u201ccreate the space to advance in the engagement with the United States,\u201d she said, adding that Romania\u2019s procurement plan included \u201cmore than $2 billion\u201d of U.S. kit. <\/p>\n
