Combs announced Officer Elyse Hand as this year\u2019s awardee due to her \u201ccourageous actions\u201d Nov. 2, 2025, when she was shot twice while attempting to arrest a wanted fugitive.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"figure-img img-fluid mx-auto d-block\" alt=\"Jacksonville police officer shot in the line of duty awarded Hometown Hero Award by U.S....\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/CWX62SCSUVGCDLNTNWLQ6EEESE.jfif.jpeg\" width=\"980\" height=\"735\" \/>Jacksonville police officer shot in the line of duty awarded Hometown Hero Award by U.S. Attorney&#8217;s Office(U.S. Department of Justice)<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Hand is currently recovering from her wounds, supported by her husband, a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper, and their young son, according to the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">In honor of Hand, the office held a gift-in-kind charity drive to benefit local child advocacy centers in the U.S. Department of Justice district, including:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"list | article-list\">\n<li>Children\u2019s Advocacy Center of Smith County in Tyler<\/li>\n<li>Harold\u2019s House East Texas Alliance for Children in Lufkin<\/li>\n<li>Children\u2019s Advocacy Center of Collin County in Plano<\/li>\n<li>Grayson County Children\u2019s Advocacy Center in Sherman<\/li>\n<li>Texarkana Children\u2019s Advocacy Center in Texarkana<\/li>\n<li>Garth House in Beaumont<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cAs the Eastern District of Texas\u2019 Hometown Hero, Officer Hand represents the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers across the nation every day.
