He hangs round the house with little initiative and does not study much,\u201d father Frank Hawking wrote in his diaries in 1961, according to the upcoming book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/622065\/hawking-by-graham-farmelo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Stephen Hawking: His Life and Work<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank went on to write that his wife Isobel, Stephen\u2019s mom, told him \u201che has an inferiority complex to me (he has no need to) and he has lost faith in physics at Oxford, thinking it is inferior to arts. This is a great pity if so,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2026\/may\/23\/stephen-hawking-father-worried-son-does-not-study-much-diaries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">an excerpt in The Guardian.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39468382\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/professor-stephen-hawking-addressing-cambridge-128572275.jpg\" alt=\"Man with ALS in a wheelchair with a respirator\" class=\"wp-image-39468382\"  \/>Stephen Hawking was one of the greatest science minds who ever lived. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Two years later, at age 21, Hawking was diagnosed with ALS and told he had two years to live.<\/p>\n<p>He went on to wildly defy both his dad\u2019s and his doctors\u2019 predictions, and lived to become the world\u2019s most renown astrophysicist in the world before dying in 2018, at the age of 76.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote the book \u201cA Brief History of Time,\u201d which was published on Sept. 1, 1988 and sold more than 25 million copies worldwide, achieved legendary status as one of the most celebrated minds of our time.<\/p>\n<p>Hawking was especially known for his mind-blowing work about black holes.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49489051;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39468379\" width=\"882\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/cosmologist-stephen-hawking-october-10-128571968.jpg\" alt=\"A man in a wheelchair hooked up to a respirator\" class=\"wp-image-39468379\"  \/>Hawking wrote \u201cA Brief History of Time,\u201d that went on to sell 25 million copies worldwide. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Hawking shared these words in the final paragraph of the book: \u201cRemember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at.
