WILL COUNTY, Ill. (WLS) — A relative stopped a juvenile’s alleged elementary school shooting plot in the south suburbs on Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Investigators believe the juvenile was on his way to carry out a school shooting at Grand Prairie Elementary School when his relative discovered that he had a gun, the Will County Sheriff’s Office said.<\/p>\n

The relative called 911 while pinning the juvenile down, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies responded to the scene in the 2400-block of Helmar Lane in Plainfield Township just before 1 p.m. Friday.<\/p>\n

There, deputies detained the juvenile and recovered a Glock handgun and a backpack containing multiple loaded magazines, knives, an accelerant, gloves, and other items.<\/p>\n

The sheriff’s office informed the Plainfield Police Department and Plainfield School District 202 about the incident.<\/p>\n

There was an increased police presence at the school for the remainder of the day, which was the last day of school.<\/p>\n

“The student, a freshman at Plainfield High School-Central Campus, last attended school in December and has a documented history of poor attendance,” a statement from Plainfield School District 202 Superintendent Glenn Wood read in part. “Sheriff’s officials said that a relative discovered the juvenile was armed with a gun and dialed 911 while pinning the juvenile down against the ground. There was no active threat to students or staff because the incident occurred after students were dismissed due to early release.”<\/p>\n

The juvenile was taken to a hospital after making suicidal and homicidal statements to first responders on the scene, the sheriff’s office said.<\/p>\n

Police said there is no threat to the community, adding that this is an ongoing investigation, and no charges have been filed.<\/p>\n
