{"id":819558,"date":"2026-05-24T19:37:17","date_gmt":"2026-05-24T19:37:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/819558\/"},"modified":"2026-05-24T19:37:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-24T19:37:17","slug":"whaling-wall-removed-in-dallas-to-make-way-for-fifa-mural","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/819558\/","title":{"rendered":"Whaling Wall Removed in Dallas to Make Way for FIFA Mural"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A longstanding mural in downtown Dallas by American artist Robert Wyland has been painted over to make way for a FIFA 2026 World Cup mural, celebrating Dallas\u2019 status as a host city for the international event.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Wyland, the artist behind a series of more than 100 \u201cWhaling Walls,\u201d whale conservation-themed murals installed at locations throughout the world, is incensed about the removal of his mural, which had been in place on the Texas Utilities Building since 1999. In an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox4news.com\/news\/dallas-whale-wall-mural-wyland-world-cup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Fox4 News<\/a> in Dallas, Mr. Wyland said no one had contacted him prior to his mural, Ocean Life, being painted over, and that he is preparing to pursue legal action with the goal of \u201cprotect[ing] the other works of [public] art in Dallas\u201d against a similar fate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/glasstire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/whaling-wall.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"485\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/whaling-wall-600x485.jpg\" alt=\"A five-story building in a downtown cityscape with a whale-themed mural mostly covered over in plain blue paint.\" class=\"wp-image-361585\"  \/><\/a>The Texas Utilities Building in downtown Dallas, with most of a mural by artist Robert Wyland painted over. Photo: Jessica Fuentes<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/artist-outraged-conservationist-mural-dallas-fifa-promo-1234785846\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ArtNews<\/a> reported on Monday, May 18, confirmation that the artist intends to sue whomever is deemed responsible, and that he is \u201cconfident the artwork is protected under the Visual Artists Rights Act (VARA) of 1990,\u201d which grants protections to artists against their works being intentionally destroyed. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/101st-congress\/house-bill\/2690\/text\/eh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Section 4 of the VARA act<\/a> specifically addresses \u201cRemoval of visual artworks from buildings,\u201d offering the artist protections against \u201cdestruction, distortion, mutilation, or other modification of the work\u201d and requiring \u201ca diligent, good faith attempt\u201d to notify the artist in advance of such actions.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the owner of the Texas Utilities Building, Toronto-based Slate Asset Management, told Glasstire that the company was approached by <a href=\"https:\/\/downtowndallas.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Downtown Dallas, Inc.<\/a> (DDI), a development group, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasfwc26.com\/home\/our-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">North Texas FIFA World Cup Organizing Committee<\/a> in March 2026 with a request to donate the wall for a new public art installation to be completed by a local Dallas artist. The spokesperson said that the company was told by the Dallas organizations that Mr. Wyland had been notified, and explained that Slate is not being compensated in any way for the use of the wall space.<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Scripps, DDI President &amp; CEO, sent the following statement to Glasstire:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDDI participated in early conversations surrounding Whaling Wall #82 and introduced the North Texas FIFA World Cup Host Committee to the property owners. DDI did not commission, fund, or manage this project.
