{"id":819665,"date":"2026-05-24T20:56:27","date_gmt":"2026-05-24T20:56:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/819665\/"},"modified":"2026-05-24T20:56:27","modified_gmt":"2026-05-24T20:56:27","slug":"shark-kills-spearfisher-in-front-of-friends-in-australia-terrifying-thing-to-see","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/819665\/","title":{"rendered":"Shark kills spearfisher in front of friends in Australia: &#8220;Terrifying thing to see&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A man spearfishing with friends was killed by a shark on the Great Barrier Reef on Sunday, police said, in Australia&#8217;s second fatal shark attack in just over a week.<\/p>\n<p>The 39-year-old man was with three friends diving from a boat at Kennedy Shoal off the Queensland state coast south of Cairns when he was attacked, Police Inspector Elaine Burns said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The man had been spearfishing when he was attacked and died from a critical head injury,&#8221; Burns told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Police said the man who pulled the victim from the water was &#8220;pretty close&#8221; to the incident and witnessed the attack, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-24\/hull-heads-shark-bite\/106715896\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">reported<\/a>. people were on board the boat<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would assume they would be pretty traumatized, that&#8217;s quite a terrifying thing to see happen right in front of you,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-24\/hull-heads-shark-bite\/106715896\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Burns said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The unidentified victim, a Cairns resident, was brought by boat around noon to the tourist town of Hull Heads where paramedics were waiting. He had &#8220;sustained injuries not compatible with life,&#8221; an ambulance service statement said.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy Shoal is a shallow coral reef popular with recreational fishers. Divers are also attracted to the Lady Bowen, a 19th century shipwreck.<\/p>\n<p>Police said the species of shark involved in the attack was unknown at this stage, but fishers reported bull sharks had been seen in the area before the attack.<\/p>\n<p>A shark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/shark-kills-spearfishing-diver-australia\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fatally mauled spearfisher Steve Mattabonni<\/a> on May 16 at a coral reef off Rottnest Island near the southwest coast of Western Australia state. Mattabonni was with friends when he was attacked, Western Australia Police Sergeant Michael Wear said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The friends have witnessed the horrific event,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-16\/man-attacked-by-shark-rottnest-island\/106688012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Wear said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 38-year-old Perth resident was taken by boat to the holiday island where paramedics were unable to resuscitate him.<\/p>\n<p>A 16-foot white shark was suspected.<\/p>\n<p>Australia has averaged more than three fatal shark attacks a year in recent decades. The latest death is Australia&#8217;s third shark fatality for 2026.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/australian-boy-dies-bitten-shark-sydney-harbor\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nico Antic, 12, died<\/a> in a hospital days after he was attacked by a suspected bull shark off a Sydney beach on Jan. 18.
