The new shop at 6100 Precinct Line Road opened on May 21.

Cameron, a former college baseball player, said he’s been making ice cream for the shop daily in anticipation of opening week customers. The brand, made fresh daily on site, offers 48 rotating flavors, including classic and seasonal flavors. The shop also sells nondairy ice cream and sorbets.

Ice cream is scooped into a container at the new Handel’s location in Hurst on May 22, 2026. Garcia. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Eric Garcia: How is it starting a business with your dad?

Cameron Summers: It’s been pretty exciting. Back in the day, my dad and I were always together to travel to baseball games or any kind of sports-related thing. It’s been a real take-me-back-to-the-old-days kind of thing. It’s awesome. It’s been a blessing, really.

Garcia: How easy has it been to start a business with your dad?

Cameron: It took about a year. We bounced ideas off each other. It’s been a really smooth process. He’s owned his own business for about 26 years. He’s a physical therapist in North Richland Hills. I’ve been in the food industry for the past six years. I’ve worked at Wingstop as a manager and district manager, managing seven stores for a franchise owner, who is now my father-in-law. So I’ve been learning about the food industry and what it takes — the customers, the employees, the community around you. It’s been a whole different world than just going to school to get my finance degree. I’m really passionate about food, so it’s been a really exciting journey.”

Garcia: How did you become familiar with Handel’s?

Cameron: Handel’s started in Ohio, and I grew up in the town it started. I’ve known Handel’s my whole life.

George Summers: Pretty much. Every birthday, every graduation, and even his wedding.

A Handel’s worker prepares in-house made ice cream at the new shop’s location in Hurst on May 22, 2026. (Maria Crane | Fort Worth Report/CatchLight Local/Report for America)

Garcia: What prompted you guys to go into business together?

George: For me, it’s always something I wanted to do for both of my kids. Cam’s more into the food business, my daughter is in medicine like me. Eventually, I want to do something with her as well, and just leave that legacy for them so they can have their own thing, for them and their kids and their kids’ kids. That’s been my goal as a dad, to set them up to work for themselves as I’ve always done.

Garcia: What brought the family to Texas?

George: The kids left us and came down here. We didn’t want to stay in Ohio anymore so we followed along. It’s been a good move actually. We’re very blessed to be down here. It’s just been much easier businesswise so it’s been good.

Garcia: Are y’all surviving the Texas heat?

George: I’d rather have the Texas heat than the Ohio cold.

Cameron: The first year was pretty brutal down here. I was not ready for the heat.

Garcia: Do you have a favorite ice cream flavor?

Cameron: That’s a hard question to answer. There are so many good flavors. We make everything homemade. We have 48 flavors at all times. We have about 110 that rotate out throughout the year. We have seasonal flavors. Right now, I’m really stuck on the Sticky Fingers, it’s a peanut butter ice cream with a caramel ripple, brownie pieces and chocolate truffles with salted caramel. It’s kind of like a Snickers, but on steroids.

Garcia: What about you, George?

George: Mine has always been the black cherry with whole black cherries, brownie pieces and chocolate chunks in it. Yesterday, I had this fresh banana ice cream with brownies and caramel in it. It’s all just super good and super rich. You get a lot of ice cream for the money.

Eric E.
