Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks<\/b><\/a>]<\/b><\/p>\nNew Chicago Police Chief Earl Mayo is currently in custody of the Clark County Jail on a \u201cfugitive from justice\u201d charge, according to online jail records. <\/p>\n
He was arrested on May 22 on I-70 eastbound near US-40 by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, according to the Clark County Sheriff\u2019s Office. <\/p>\n

Court documents filed in Lake County, Indiana, on Sunday state that Mayo is facing charges in his home state, including theft, obstruction of justice, unlawful possession of an anabolic steroid, and official misconduct. <\/p>\n
News Center 7 reached out to Mayo\u2019s father, Jerry Williams. <\/p>\n
He released the following statement:<\/p>\n
\u201cMy wife and I and our family are deeply concerned over recent information regarding our son, Earl Mayo, of the New Chicago Police Department. We raised all of our children with love, guidance, and a strong foundation of values. We\u2019ve always held our children to higher standards, as we have ourselves.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are aware there are allegations that are troubling, and we struggle to reconcile them with the values we worked so hard to instill in all of our children and grandchildren. <\/p>\n
\u201cUnder our criminal justice system, Earl is presumed innocent unless and until proven otherwise. We respect that fundamental principle, and it is important that the legal process be allowed to proceed fairly and impartially.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf it is ultimately established that Earl engaged in the conduct alleged by the government, then he must and should accept responsibility for his actions and face the consequences.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is an extremely difficult and emotional time for our family. Given the seriousness of this matter and the ongoing legal proceedings, we cannot comment any further on the undisclosed details of this situation.\u201d<\/p>\n
We have also reached out to the Lake County Sheriff\u2019s Office in Indiana and the City of New Chicago. <\/p>\n
