{"id":820588,"date":"2026-05-25T07:08:27","date_gmt":"2026-05-25T07:08:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/820588\/"},"modified":"2026-05-25T07:08:27","modified_gmt":"2026-05-25T07:08:27","slug":"map-shows-which-major-us-cities-would-be-underwater-if-seas-rise-us-news-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/820588\/","title":{"rendered":"Map shows which major US cities would be underwater if seas rise &#8211; US News &#8211; News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"withoutCaption\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/GettyImages-126413790-562456.jpg\" class=\"zoomEnabled\" data-img=\"https:\/\/cdn-images.the-express.com\/img\/dynamic\/10\/1200x712\/secondary\/GettyImages-126413790-562456.jpg?r=1779648836634\" alt=\"Antarctica glaciers\" title=\"Antarctica glaciers\" width=\"590\" height=\"443\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A melting glacier in Antarctica could cause sea levels to rise across the world (Image: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have been warning of the melting \u201cDoomsday Glacier,\u201d which could have catastrophic effects on sea levels.<\/p>\n<p>The melting Thwaites Glacier, which sits on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, is larger than the size of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-express.com\/latest\/florida\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|AutoLink\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Florida<\/a> and is one of the fastest-retreating glaciers in <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"Antarctic\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-express.com\/latest\/antarctic\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Antarctica<\/a>. The Thwaites Glacier is roughly 80 miles across, making it the widest glacier in the world.<\/p>\n<p>It has been nicknamed the &#8220;Doomsday Glacier\u201d because <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"Dying river in the &#039;cradle of civilization&#039; sparks biblical prophecy fears\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-express.com\/news\/world-news\/206906\/Euphrates-River-drying-biblical-prophecy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">scientists have found that it\u2019s melting<\/a> at an alarming rate due to warm <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"Trump gloats after scientists gives update on most apocalyptic climate scenario\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-express.com\/news\/politics\/207653\/trump-apocalyptic-climate-change-scenario\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ocean water caused by climate change<\/a>, and if it collapses, it could raise sea levels by nearly 11 feet, putting large coastal cities at risk.<\/p>\n<p>The ice loss from the Thwaites Glacier currently accounts for about 4% of global sea-level rise, according to the <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/thwaitesglacier.org\/about\/facts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration<\/a>. Every year, it loses 50 billion tons of ice more than it receives in snowfall.<\/p>\n<p>The melting of the Thwaites Glacier could be devastating for coastal communities<\/p>\n<p class=\"withoutCaption\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/562458.jpg\" alt=\"EXPRESS \/ MIRROR Map shows which major US cities\" title=\"EXPRESS \/ MIRROR Map shows which major US cities\" width=\"590\" height=\"294\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The NOAA map shows which U.S. cities could be underwater if sea levels rise 10 feet (Image: NOAA)<\/p>\n<p>A 2024 <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2404766121\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> led by researchers at UC Irvine and the University of Waterloo used high-resolution satellite radar data to identify areas where warm, high-pressure seawater was rushing beneath the grounded ice of the Thwaites Glacier, accelerating melting and driving faster sea-level rise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThwaites is the most unstable place in the Antarctic and contains the equivalent of 60 centimeters of sea level rise,\u201d Christine Dow, an associate professor of glaciology at the University of Waterloo and a co-author of the study, told <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/news.uci.edu\/2024\/05\/20\/uc-irvine-led-team-uncovers-vigorous-melting-at-antarcticas-thwaites-glacier\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UC Irvine News<\/a>. \u201cThe worry is that we are underestimating the speed that the glacier is changing, which would be devastating for coastal communities around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dow continued to explain, \u201cAt the moment we don\u2019t have enough information to say one way or the other how much time there is before the oceanwater intrusion is irreversible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy improving the models and focusing our research on these critical glaciers, we will try to get these numbers at least pinned down for decades versus centuries,\u201d she added. \u201cThis work will help people adapt to changing ocean levels, along with focusing on reducing carbon emissions to prevent the worst-case scenario.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another 2024 <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.ado7794\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> published in Science Advances by Dartmouth College and University of Edinburgh researchers found through simulations that the Thwaites Glacier may not be as vulnerable to marine ice cliff instability (MICI) as previously thought.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found, \u201cAll models show that Thwaites Glacier would not retreat further in the 21st century.\u201d This study showed, through simulations, that the \u201cthinning\u201d of the Thwaites could \u201creduce the calving rate\u201d and stabilize the cliff. The researchers note that the model projections should be re-evaluated.<\/p>\n<p>What U.S. cities would be at risk if sea levels rise 10 feet?<\/p>\n<p>The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/coast.noaa.gov\/digitalcoast\/tools\/slr.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">projection map<\/a> of sea level rise shows which areas of the U.S. would be affected if sea levels rise by 10 feet.
