{"id":820661,"date":"2026-05-25T07:53:29","date_gmt":"2026-05-25T07:53:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/820661\/"},"modified":"2026-05-25T07:53:29","modified_gmt":"2026-05-25T07:53:29","slug":"aaron-boone-expects-anthony-volpe-to-play-a-lot-on-yankees-road-trip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/820661\/","title":{"rendered":"Aaron Boone expects Anthony Volpe to play &#8216;a lot&#8217; on Yankees&#8217; road trip"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Anthony Volpe wasn\u2019t in the lineup again for <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/24\/sports\/aaron-judge-hits-walk-off-homer-to-give-yankees-win-over-rays\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sunday\u2019s 2-0 win over the Rays<\/a> in The Bronx as Jos\u00e9 Caballero manned shortstop, but Volpe should get more playing time on the upcoming road trip.<\/p>\n<p>When the Yankees visit Kansas City on Monday, they\u2019ll face Michael Wacha, a right-hander who is tougher on lefty hitters than on righties, followed by lefties Bailey Falter and Noah Cameron.<\/p>\n<p>And in Sacramento, the A\u2019s are scheduled to throw left-hander Jacob Lopez on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Volpe, according to manager Aaron Boone, just started working at second base, but Boone might keep him at short when he\u2019s in the lineup, utilizing Caballero\u2019s versatility around the infield.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI expect Anthony to play a lot when we go to Kansas City, as well as [Caballero],\u2019\u2019 Boone said of the infield, which could land Ryan McMahon on the bench.<\/p>\n<p>And while Boone said Volpe could just stay at short, he added, \u201cI do want him working some at second, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Volpe hasn\u2019t played anything but shortstop in a game since 2021, when he was in High-A ball, although he did work a bit at second base before he won the starting job at short in 2023.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39478534\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/jumps-blue-jays-designated-hitter-128356216.jpg\" alt=\"Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe jumps over Blue Jays designated hitter George Springer during a double play.\" class=\"wp-image-39478534\"  \/>Anthony Volpe (11) jumps over Blue Jays designated hitter George Springer (4) as he competes a double play during the first inning of the Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays game at Yankee Stadium on May 20. Bill Kostroun\/New York Post<\/p>\n<p>The Yankees traded for Caballero last season with the idea of playing him at different spots, but he\u2019s focused his work at short while filling in for Volpe, who was sidelined by offseason shoulder surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Boone said he expected Caballero to be able to go back to his utility role successfully if called upon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s one of his superpowers, his ability to move around,\u2019\u2019 Boone said of Caballero. \u201cI have a ton of confidence in Jos\u00e9. Off the bat, I think it\u2019s gonna be in the gap, I know it\u2019s gonna be a close game and you\u2019re trying to either score or get to third. I peeked up and it was right at him. That was a bad look.
