Plagued by soft focus, motion blur, awkward composition, and low resolution.\u201d <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Here\u2019s a short video showing off how I captured a plane in front of the sun, even though they follow less predictable paths than aircraft. <\/p>\n<p>The hardest part wasn\u2019t even taking all those photos\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cHY0z6i6at\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/cHY0z6i6at<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Andrew McCarthy (@AJamesMcCarthy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AJamesMcCarthy\/status\/2056386787006619806?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">May 18, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The photographer set out to change that by optimizing his setup for an airplane. But while some objects in the sky, <a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2025\/06\/20\/once-in-a-lifetime-photo-of-iss-crossing-the-sun-as-solar-flare-erupts\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">like the International Space Station<\/a> (ISS), can be captured crossing the Sun by careful study of its flight path, airplanes cannot be forecasted in the same way. This meant McCarthy had to set up two telescopes, point them at the Sun, and just hope a plane flies through his frame perfectly. <\/p>\n<p>McCarthy set his cameras up to take 10 photos of the Sun per second for six entire days \u2014 a staggering 1.7 million photos. \u201cI almost gave up after six days without a good transit,\u201d McCarthy says.<\/p>\n<p>But at last, a United Airlines Boeing 737 flying from Houston to Los Angeles transited the solar disk, and McCarthy caught it on both telescopes. This enabled him to make a high-resolution photo, which the photographer says is \u201cone of the best\u201d of his career. He was also able to show the final image to the actual flight crew who were onboard at the time. <\/p>\n<p>On top of all that, McCarthy captured two floating solar prominences. \u201cThese are the fluffy bits floating separately from the Sun,\u201d McCarthy explains. \u201cOne was fleeting, as part of a small coronal mass ejection, while the other was lingering all day.
