{"id":82329,"date":"2025-07-22T05:08:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T05:08:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/82329\/"},"modified":"2025-07-22T05:08:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T05:08:09","slug":"colbert-tells-trump-go-f-yourself-after-president-exults-over-late-show-cancellation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/82329\/","title":{"rendered":"Colbert Tells Trump &#8216;Go F&#8212; Yourself&#8217; After President Exults Over &#8216;Late Show&#8217; Cancellation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/stephen-colbert\/\" id=\"auto-tag_stephen-colbert\" data-tag=\"stephen-colbert\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Colbert<\/a> had a succinct message to President Trump, one that involved an anatomical impossibility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn his monologue opening Monday\u2019s \u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/late-show-with-stephen-colbert\/\" id=\"auto-tag_late-show-with-stephen-colbert\" data-tag=\"late-show-with-stephen-colbert\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Late Show With Stephen Colbert<\/a>,\u201d Colbert referred to Trump\u2019s celebrating <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/cbs\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cbs\" data-tag=\"cbs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CBS<\/a>\u2018s <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/cbs-cancel-late-show-stephen-colbert-financial-decision-1236464356\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sudden decision to axe the show<\/a>. The U.S. president, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/trump-absolutely-love-stephen-colbert-fired-jimmy-kimmel-next-1236464640\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">post on Truth Social last Friday<\/a>, wrote, \u201cI absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWith mock outrage, Colbert said, \u201cHow dare you, sir? Would an untalented man be able to compose the following satirical witticism?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tColbert then appeared in an on-screen frame that said \u201cEloquence Cam\u201d and, staring directly into the camera, affected a clipped New York accent: \u201cGo fuck yourself.\u201d (The f-bomb was bleeped out.) The line drew a massive roar of approval from the audience in the Ed Sullivan Theater, followed by cheers of \u201cStephen! Stephen! Stephen!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the monologue, Colbert noted that Trump also said in his online post, \u201cI hear Jimmy Kimmel is next\u201d to be fired. To which Colbert said, \u201cNope, no, no. Absolutely not. Kimmel, I am the martyr. There\u2019s only room for one on this cross. And the view is fantastic from up here. I can see your house!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m going to just say it: Cancel culture has gone to far,\u201d Colbert quipped at the start of the show. He joked that CBS execs \u201cmade one mistake: They left me alive.\u201d And, he said, \u201cfor the next 10 months, the gloves are off\u201d \u2014 and he then offered this comically milquetoast critique of Trump: \u201cI don\u2019t care for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tColbert reiterated his praise for CBS, saying they have \u201calways been great partners,\u201d but asked rhetorically, \u201cHow could it be a purely financial decision if \u2018The Late Show\u2019 is No. 1 in the ratings?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe Late Show\u201d posted a preview of Colbert\u2019s June 21 monologue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DMZGsDBxIWN\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on Instagram<\/a> ahead of the program\u2019s broadcast on CBS with the caption: \u201cSticks and stones may break our bones but presidential turds can never hurt us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPrior to Monday\u2019s taping, a crowd of about 100 protestors gathered outside the Ed Sullivan Theater in midtown Manhattan shouting, \u201cTrump must go, Colbert must stay,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JamesMartinSJ\/status\/1947394546247127292\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">post<\/a> on X by James Martin, editor at large for America Magazine. That was in addition to several hundred more waiting to get in to see the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tColbert had announced the show\u2019s termination <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AuqEZx6TmfI\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to the \u201cLate Show\u201d audience<\/a> during the taping on Thursday, July 17, and that video was shared online. Colbert said he had found out about the decision on Wednesday night. He expressed gratitude to fans, his staff and CBS execs (saying \u201cthe folks at CBS have been great partners\u201d) but also regret that the network was exiting late night: \u201c[I]t is a fantastic job. I wish somebody else was getting it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tColbert\u2019s guests Monday are scheduled to be actors Sandra Oh (whose credits include \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy\u201d and \u201cKilling Eve\u201d) and Dave Franco (\u201cNow You See Me,\u201d \u201cThe Disaster Artist\u201d). He returned after taking Friday off (when CBS aired a rerun of the June 24 episode with John Cena and Lorde).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen Oh came on stage, she said to Colbert, \u201cCan I just start by saying something that I feel like probably everyone here and what everyone outside who\u2019s so supportive wants to say, which is that, I\u2019m so sorry, and saddened, and properly outraged for the cancellation of late night here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOh took Colbert\u2019s hand and said: \u201cTo CBS and Paramount: a plague on both of your houses.\u201d She added, \u201cAnd also a pox on all those that they serve.\u201d Oh will appear this summer as Olivia in <a href=\"https:\/\/publictheater.org\/productions\/season\/2425\/fsitp\/twelfth-night\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shakespeare in the Park\u2019s production of \u201cTwelfth Night\u201d<\/a> in Manhattan\u2019s Central Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m lrv-u-text-align-center  \">\n\t<strong>SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/stephen-colbert-trump-go-f-yourself-cbs-late-show-cancelled-1236466001\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Colbert Claps Back at Trump\u2019s Gloating About \u2018Late Show\u2019 Cancellation: \u2018Go F\u2014 Yourself\u2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCBS, in announcing the <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/cbs-cancel-late-show-stephen-colbert-financial-decision-1236464356\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cancellation of \u201cThe Late Show,\u201d<\/a> said it was \u201cpurely a financial decision,\u201d and the show\u2019s axing follows <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/inside-cbs-breakup-stephen-colbert-late-night-audience-1236464740\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">years-long slide in the economics of late-night TV<\/a>. The next season will be the 11th and final season of Colbert\u2019s show on the network, ending its run in May 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut the news also came two weeks after CBS parent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/paramount-trump-settlement-60-minutes-lawsuit-1236404935\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paramount Global said it will pay Trump $16 million to settle his lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0alleging a \u201c60 Minutes\u201d interview with Kamala Harris was deceptively edited. On July 14, Colbert had said on his show that the settlement by CBS\u2019s parent company\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zzvx3L3DQb8\">was \u201ca big, fat bribe,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0alleging that Paramount made the payment because the company is seeking to secure the Trump administration\u2019s approval to merge with Skydance Media. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCritics of Trump including Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Democrat of Massachusetts, suggested that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/jimmy-kimmel-reacts-cbs-canceling-stephen-colbert-1236464421\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CBS\u2019s cancelation of Colbert\u2019s show were related to the Paramount settlement<\/a>\u00a0with the president. Warren has has <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/warren-investigation-paramount-trump-settlement-bribery-1236446129\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previously characterized the Paramount\/CBS settlement as \u201cbribery.\u201d<\/a> \u201cAmerica deserves to know if his show was canceled for political reasons,\u201d Warren said in a July 17 statement. On Friday, the Writers Guild of America called for <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/writers-guild-bribery-investigation-colbert-cancellation-1236464878\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the New York State attorney general to investigate the circumstances around \u201cThe Late Show\u201d cancellation<\/a>, with the union saying it had \u201csignificant concerns that\u00a0The Late Show\u2019s cancelation is a bribe, sacrificing free speech to curry favor with the Trump Administration as the company looks for merger approval.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOn Monday, Warren and Sens. Bernie Sanders and Ron Wyden <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.warren.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/warren_sanders_wyden_letter_to_skydance_on_paramount_settlement.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">sent a letter to Skydance CEO David Ellison<\/a>, asking whether Skydance and Trump had a \u201csecret side deal\u201d apart from the Paramount settlement. Trump has claimed the settlement is <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/trump-60-minutes-lawsuit-settlement-advertising-35-million-paramount-psa-1236447353\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">actually worth as much as $35 million<\/a> when factoring in \u201cadvertising.\u201d In the letter, the senators also asked Ellison whether he \u201cor other Skydance executives\u201d were \u201cinvolved in discussions about canceling \u2018The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.&#8217;\u201d According to CBS, Skydance played no part in the\u00a0decision to cancel the late-night show. (Skydance declined to comment.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tColbert, in the July 17 video, told the audience, \u201cBefore we start the show, I want to let you know something that I found out just last night. Next year will be our last season. The network will be ending \u2018The Late Show\u2019 in May.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAfter the audience reacted with cries of dismay and boos, Colbert continued: \u201cYeah, I share your feelings. It\u2019s not just the end of our show, but it\u2019s the end of \u2018The Late Show\u2019 on CBS. I\u2019m not being replaced. This is all just going away. And I do want to say, I do want to say that the folks at CBS have been great partners. I\u2019m so grateful to the Tiffany Network for giving me this chair and this beautiful theater to call home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cAnd of course, I\u2019m grateful to you, the audience, who have joined us every night in here, out there, all around the world, Mr. and Mrs. America, and all the ships at sea,\u201d Colbert said. \u201cI\u2019m grateful to share the stage with this band, these artists over here every night. And I am extraordinarily, deeply grateful to the 200 people who work here. We get to do this show for each other every day, all day. And I\u2019ve had the pleasure and the responsibility of sharing what we do every day with you in front of this camera for the last 10 years. And let me tell you, it is a fantastic job. I wish somebody else was getting it. And it\u2019s a job that I\u2019m looking forward to doing with this usual gang of idiots for another 10 months.
